Used x6 would be ideal. BD makes more sense if you get decent deal off new one. If you do get BD, it better be FX-81xx.

I don't really think swapping GTX 460 to more than twice as fast card counts as meaningless, or only 10 more fps. And what comes to the 3570K, that is very small investment in terms of money, 2500K sells quite nicely.

And it's not a harmful vice if you have money for it. But I don't really see the point of moving from 2kK to 3kK unless you actually use all the processing power. If you're getting lag with the 4x0, then maybe an upgrade is in order.

I have some minor variation of this card. Using Windows 7 x64. I think BF3 is crashing a lot on me because the card is overheating. The card came with something called ASUS SmartDoctor, which I used when I was on Vista, but now does not work with 7. I installed RivaTuner, but could only find fan options under Power User and had no idea what I was doing.

So, are there any simple fan control programs out there for a tech dummy like me? I just want to be able to turn it up when I play so things will cool down.

Try sapphire trixx or MSI afterburner. Both have an option where you can create a custom fan profile.
I use trixx...

that's not very hot for a graphics card, especially on full load in a demanding game. graphics cards can take like 80-90C pretty easy. they're not like processors.

I'm thinking of getting a new lap top this fall. This thing is garbage but I'd like it to survive until fall. Any clue why this thing might be having so much trouble cooling down?

try a laptop cooler.. have 0 experience with them, but i have seen them here and there..

Made up my mind now. Getting Intel Core i7 3820 + Asus Rampage IV Formula X79 now + 2x GTX 680 or one GTX 690 this summer. If IB-E is any good, might get that too next year. Everything else I already have ready.

3570K/3770K turned out to be hot and not very good OC on air and that is the last thing you can get for LGA1155.

Works pretty good IMO. I haven't used a variety, so I wouldn't know if there are better options in the $30 range. Your laptop might be small enough for the U2 version, which is less than $20 but essentially the same design - just smaller dimensions and one less fan.

Doesn't matter. As above, if you can't put it on a flat surface with room for air ro circulate, get a laptop cooler like Beduin suggests. Modern day laptops aren't meant to be put on laps.

it's on my lap with the whole left side with the fan vent exposed it's not like there's any restricting air flow...and it overheats on flat surfaces too.

Hell I used to play Call of Duty World at War on this thing sitting on my lap and it was fine. Now I can't watch 10 minutes of youtube.
