it's obd-II, that's good.  mileage isn't too bad for a 15 year old truck.  4R44e auto transmissions are relatively rugged.   unless you and your buddy know what you're looking at, take it to your repair shop for a pre-purchase inspection.  that $2k truck could easily need $500 in basic maintenance.  it's probably ready for a timing belt and you better toss a new water pump and thermostat on there, that's another $350-500.  accessory belt?  fan clutch? pulleys? maybe the battery is 9 years old, that's another $100.   are the tires any good?  that's another $600.

Shifty, you might just save a little more first, to be honest... Granted, I am not in Cali, but I have always lucked into really good deals on my cars...

Roughly (without looking them all up):
In 94 I bought an 86 Jeep Commanche for $2K
In 98 I bought a 94 Ford Taurus for about $4K
In 02 I bought a 99 Ford Taurus for about $5500
In 06 I bought an 02 Chevy Impala for about $4K (and am still driving it, 100K miles later)

I understand I am damned lucky... But also understand I am damned patient. I never felt desperate to buy something RIGHT NOW and took my time. I wasn't even old enough to drive when I bought the Jeep, but I had been saving for a car, and knew a deal when I saw one. Don't "settle" for something JUST to have something. Get what you NEED. And what you NEED is something dependable, that you won't be dumping a crap load of money into. Seriously, there are few things worse than dealing with broken down cars.

Trucks are useful. Especially in the winter. Good lord are they fucking useful in the winter.

I've been partial to the Silverados myself. Drove the family Silverado to 200k miles. It would pass inspection this year if the frame was in good order, which it isn't. Engine runs great though.

TLDR: Looking for car, got $3500. Needs to get me from point A to B without using too much gas, and needs trunk space or bed, must seat 4.
Look for these cars in this order:

Honda Accord
Honda Civic
Toyota Corolla
Toyota Camry
chevy cobalt -surprisingly robust little heaps.

Stick to the 4 cyl. engines, and an average mileage below 20k/year.  Nissan manufactures garbage, Mazdas are almost always poorly maintained and anything from Korea is shit.  Ford focuses are junk after about 50k miles,  they tend to fall apart precipitously.  Any taurus you could afford would be shit.  And avoid anything dodge -in your price range all that's left is crap.

but $3500 won't get you very far, especially in california.
Most accurate statement i've seen so far.  +1

Edit:  Except go for a Civic over the Accord.  Easier and cheaper to work on. The f22 in the 90-93 accords are kinda shitty with the whole BS balance shaft and 30* tilted engine. I wouldn't call them unreliable, just kind of annoying.

Found some civics with close to 100,000 miles and around ~$3000. They seem like really good deals and are supposedly in great condition. I also found some newer rangers. One from 2001 with only 100,000 miles for 4000 but I'll offer him 3 in cash and see what he says.

If you treat a Honda right it will last you a good 300,000 miles, parts for them are also typically very cheap compared to American made cars (in my experience). Ford trucks are usually alright
