10-core Ivy Bridge-EP Sample Tested

The Ivy Bridge LGA1155 processors inbound for April are mom and pop PC chips in front of the monstrosities Intel has planned for the enterprise (and possibly high-end desktop/HEDT) markets, based on the architecture. An 10-core Ivy Bridge-EP engineering sample, made it to the right hands in Taiwan (wrong hands for Intel), that wasted no time in putting them through some tests.

The 10-core Ivy Bridge-EP/EX chip (LGA2011, 2P-capable) features 10 next-generation cores clocked at 2.80 GHz, with 256 KB L2 cache per core, 30 MB shared L3 cache, and HyperThreading technology that enables 20 logical CPUs. This chip crunched WPrime 1024M in 158.5 seconds, and scores 41.78X relative speed in Fritz chess when just 8 of its 20 threads are put to use. You can also find some pretty screen shots of CPU-Z with its long processor selection list and Windows 8 task manager.

I want to upgrade my CPU and GPU this week and I can't find a good solution.  I'm running AMDs newest chipset(900 series), but bulldozer has too many issues to warrant me buying one.  I want something with at least six cores for streaming video.  Don't know what to do really.  Any ideas?

Need an SSD for my Hackintosh as I will be installing Lion soon and I want (need) it to be very fast.

Current specs:
i7 920
Asus P6T
6GB DDR3 OCZ RAM
Corsair Professional Series AX750 modular PSU
HD6990 / 8800GTS 640MB (the latter is used for OSX as the 6990 is not supported)

I'm currently looking at these versions:

Samsung 830 128GB
OCZ Vertex 3
Intel SSD 510

Now I'm taking my thoughts from here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd … 115-6.html

Fact is, I don't want pure speed, I need a good balance between speed and reliability. I know all about the controllers and which ones offer better speed over reliability and the opposite, but I just don't know what to go for as I've not delved in this part of computing yet.

If someone can convince me that a 256GB drive is better than getting a 128GB or so, then I'll listen and get that. The reason for the 128GB is that I don't see myself using more for applications/server/coding.

SATA III is a must as I want it to be relatively future proof when I upgrade from my 1366 board.

So, suggestions?

Force 3 120gb, I have one, running it on sata II atm, and it's ridiculously fast.

It's a tier 4 on the tomshardware list and the 830 rapes it in every aspect for pretty much the same price.

I understand that, but I don't see the point in getting an SSD that is worse than another one at the same price when I want to upgrade in the future.

SSD's are overpriced IMO... well, that's what I tell myself to stop me from buying one

They really aren't. If you want the most significant performance increase on a computer then an SSD is your only option. CPUs have massively outperformed everything else lately, and if there is no SSD to be paired with an i core processor, then you're seriously bottlenecking your computer.

Also, in the current HDD pricing status, SSDs are cheaper than anything really. Seeing as a 1TB HDD now costs over £100, shelling out £140 for a 128GB SSD that has a massive performance upgrade over the 1TB HDD is a worthwhile investment.

I told myself that 1 year ago, but not anymore

Gentlemen... I ask you a question: I'm getting an sli board in a couple of weeks, and my GTX460s will be running 8x/8x. Will this still be decently fast?

Yes
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Anyone have any idea why my intranet is so much slower than my internet? File transfers between computers take for-fucking-ever and yet downloads from the internet are lightning fast. It takes me like six hours to move 3 gigs through my router. What gives?

Over wifi, but I get the same result if it's wired.

The one machine is a six year old XP box that I assume has a throttle on it somewhere...

There's no reason not to use the built in browser on a mobile phone.

the built in browser on my BB is vastly inferior to Opera Mobile, as was the same story on my old non-smartphone phone.
