It wasn't a war it was a military operation to protect civilians.

Was actually quite a big deal that they did.

There was an article in the paper pointing out that removing Saddam Gadaffi cost the US U$1bn, removing Saddam cost U$800bn.

Who's the fiscal conservative now eh?
(Gadaffi really did have WMD programs and sponsor terrorism BTW)

Edit: I r misspoke

Gaddafi gave up his WMD programs after Saddam was ousted. Thus, there was no need to spend .01 to remove Gaddafi.

[rehash]He hadn't given up his programs. He was still operating a massive deception program, aimed at Iran, making them think he had WMD. Since nothing had been done for 10 years or so, he felt safe in playing that game, using UN inspectors and the world stage as part of it. As debriefed by him and others and corroborated by facts on the ground, post invasion.

He miscalculated.

If by no one, you mean those who are already predisposed to hatred of Bush and Cheney and won't believe anything that doesn't align with their already set notions of what happened...then sure.

Libyan militia captured Gaddafi's son Saif, as well as his secret service chief Senussi.

Last I heard, they don't want to extradite him to the Hague, but put him on trial in Libya.
They probably fear that he won't accidentally run into a bullet at the International Court of Justice.

Sorry, I tend to use the smiley to indicate irony.

Gaddafi's clan and buddies need to be punished hard for the atrocities they've committed.

You don't need a loony like Gaddafi in power to buy oil from Libya.

Well, time is linear in one direction - the future.
While Gaddafi already has commited a lot of atrocities and crimes, the new guys have not done so.

Are you implying that you'd rather leave someone like Gaddafi, continuing like he has done for 40 years, just because his successor may not make it better?

Let's wait till Nabucco has been finished in 2017, then we can get our gas from Asia and the Middle East directly and can circumvent Libya and Russia.

Don't forget Central Asia/South Caucasus...assuming big brother to the north allows that to happen.

I agree with Hegel's whole "history is a slaughter-bench" that eventually leads to a good outcome but not every development is a good development. You could go back and stumble while on the progression. It's not really linear...

It's the fact that I rather work with the evil we know than the evil we don't. As far as Gaddafi goes we knew were his moral compass pointed- to Gaddafi. He worked with us on our antiterrorism efforts. He sold us oil. He didn't rock the boat and did business we plenty of U.S. companies. He also persecuted the religious nutters in his country. But now we are going to have to do business with god knows what that is going to beholden to Christ knows what or who. The worst thing that can come out of their, for us, is a democratic society that cares about it's people. The best is another Gaddafi who really like us.

As you can guess when it comes to foreign policy my compass points to the U.S. and the rest of the West. I don't care for the peoples of non-Western states.
