Been discussing competitive ladder matches for BF3 and was wondering if anyone has any ideas how we are supposed to run ladder matches for competitive play?

Usually the rule was to have no unlocks so as to ensure a level field of play between the teams.

Unfortunately with no unlocks you would have to forgoe many of the (stupidly) unlockable kit, vehicle and aircraft abilities.
Most would agree that playing with no unlocks forgoes most of the best parts of the combat (ie. what are now considered secondary weapons and require an unlock).

Thoughts?

did you ever see bc2 being played competitively? why would bc3 be any different in that sense?

it would require mod support and even then those games would not work for competitive play. too casual

Yeah, same as BC2 I guess it will be the second season of competitive play that really decides who comes out on top.
By then most players had a large range of unlocks.
The first one wasn't really an even playing field.

CoD has leagues, and that game is much more casual than BF3.

..Not to mention Halo, rofl.

yup

only game coming out in the near future with a future of competitive play is CS:GO methinks.

only (big) game that came out in recent memory that was designed for competitive play was SC2

Point and laugh all you want but surely LoL qualifies as competitive considering the huge prize pools...

I frown on pretty much any game being played as "competitive", but that's because I play to have fun, not to be "the very best"...

Competitive gaming seems to focus on removing the stuff that makes the game fun and stripping it to it's basic mechanics.. e.g. "No items, Fox only, Final destination!"

Playing competitive 6v6 in TF2 is 500x more fun than I've ever had playing in pubs with stupid unlocks.

Yeah quite a few of them are allowed.

The usual thing is to ban everything that comes out during the season, because that gives people time to test them out and decide on how good they are. Then when the next season is about to start, they release a new ban list.
Really, the only banned unlocks are the ones that are either too powerful in a 6v6 setting (Wrangler, GRU), or they slow the game down (Natascha, Sandman).

The weapon bans for the upcoming season of ESEA are here:

exactly, floppy's point of "everything fun is banned" is incorrect.

Most stuff is unbanned. (don't feel like making a pie chart lol)

A lot of people seem to be under the impression that competitive players have no fun an are all "supersrs".

..I'm not sure why I'd be playing a videogame competitively if it wasn't fun.

People really play BC2 competitively?

I'll eat my own shoe if BF3 ever becomes a proper e-sport, sure there might be a few ladders and some people who think that's competitive gaming might well play in those ladders but I sincerely doubt BF3 will be making any appearance at an MLG or any similar event.

Unlocks won't be an issue for comp play, there is a server-side setting for BF3 that allows ALL unlocks.

http://battlefieldo.com/nvidialanbf3/

Comment re ALL unlocks setting is at 26min30secs.
