Some of them, yes. Depends entirely on the demographic, IIRC.Uzique wrote:

The last operation I was on was coordinated by ANA and conducted by ANA. All we did was provide security.

I don't know much about the Afghan army, but I've heard they're not the brightest bunch. I saw a video of them smoking some drug during a fight then firing randomly at the enemy, not even as good suppression fire.

Still, they'll sell out or lose to the Taliban within a year or so of Western forces leaving.

I wouldn't waste a nuke on this shithole country.

Is the U.S. getting any benefit from this Libyan war? Why are we there and why has everybody forgotten about it?!

Alot of those "freedom fighters" in Libya are probably the same dudes that were killing us in Iraq.

Cheap oil, hopefully, and a useful reminder to the leaders of other oil states that they can be removed whenever they become inconvenient.-Sh1fty- wrote:

Not much question about that. Gadaffi was a key ally against AQ. GG.Alot of those "freedom fighters" in Libya are probably the same dudes that were killing us in Iraq.

Because of the moral imperative imposed on ourselves by our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are not there fighting terrorism anymore than we are building up their governments who are friendly to the US who will not give us a bad reputation in global diplomacy. By limiting Libya to an air support campaign (without losing any troops on the ground) we are awarding legitimacy to the uprisings in the "Arab spring" and showing the Islamic world that we are not fundamentalist religionists fighting a war against their way of life. Not to mention the international support for the no fly zone. On top of all of that, Libya in the Arab world is a relatively (and some would say advanced) well educated and stabilized country despite their despotic dictator which has torn their country apart.-Sh1fty- wrote:

We are not "there", anymore than we were in Japan when we nuked them. We are providing support from the air while staying out of "regime change" on the ground. While it remains to be seen as to what Libya will look like in one or two years, the facts are, indisputably, the rebels are gaining a lot of ground on their own, and while we are throwing a lot of money at it, the situation looks a lot better than US troops on the ground doing their dirty work for them... and they are now within 40 miles of the Tripoli.
A crazy dictator who has a PROVEN record of of state-sponsored terrorism, and was the closest in the Arab world to developing a nuke? No way we should be there.
Criticize Obama all you want, when it comes to foreign policy, this is one thing that has been handled well...
p.s. its got nothing to do with oil you stupid fucks

Except he was on our side, had given up his WMD programs years ago and was in fact fighting AQ.

"We" aren't really there any longer Shifty. All "we" are doing is providing logistical support to the EU forces that are doing the majority of the strikes.-Sh1fty- wrote:

The EU is there for stability in one of their prime oil markets.
Everyone's forgotten about it because none of the "good guys" are dying, so it's not worth making big, splashy news stories about any longer.

But the US is the driving force behind NATO. And when the entirety of Europe (to which we are already internationally obligated), as well as the already well organized CIVILIAN resistance on the ground, is asking for our help, well, that doesn't change the context of the situation at all?FEOS wrote:

Its not a civilian resistance exactly...

In general, yes, the US is the driving force behind NATO. And this operation wouldn't have started (and wouldn't have continued) without US involvement. However, the US has made it clear that we are only involved to support our European allies at this point--they have the lead. That is the context of the situation: it is a European issue to which we are providing assistance.Spearhead wrote:

There is a Libya thread. I recommend any further discussion moves there.

Not unless you think the Iraq invasion was justified. It's pretty much the same thing.Spearhead wrote:
