Have you ever been on a helicopter.  It ain't exactly a "stable or quiet" environment to do your "thang".

yeah that's pretty much what apple are offering here in the UK. our value added tax is currently around 20% and the student reduction works out aroundabout that... with about £50 extra saving, too, and a £65 itunes store reward card for free, too. not bad at all. saving £300-400 on a macbook pro seems pretty nice, actually.

nice

our gov dropped NC state to 6.75 from 7.75 but quietly raised fuel tax 2 more cents on a dollar on the backend

this tax free is only for the weekend though and people are actually lining up at walmart for 12:01 to make some purchases

im not supporting a windows environment. what's ironic is that all of the apple osx lion database stuff im working on this summer is obviously on standard windows-office machines... but osx clearly isn't tailored for that. not their market or aim. for sitting around at home browsing the internet, skype, essays/work, creative shit etc. i'd take osx anyday. sometimes i feel like im burdened 'supporting a windows environment' at home, just trying to play fucking video-games...

I don't doubt they're lovely machines, the only problems I have with them are the locked down feeling I get using them, and the price is too much. Obviously, price may be an opinion when you ask someone from a working class background and someone from an upper class background..

"locked down" using them? honestly you can install linux if you're that desperate to have the onerous task of command-line running everything for geek points... osx never crashes, is quick as hell to use, and reacts quickly to every task i ask of it. i never get frustrated about being 'locked down'. apple has a command line, too.

13" screens are painful though. How much extra would the 15" be?

My mbp is 13" and I find it perfect size for a laptop.

I've had a netbook - not much more use than a smartphone, not useable enough to be a laptop. 15" and bigger aren't portable enough.

13" is where it's at.

it's the same savings on any one you buy, i just don't fancy spending £1k+ on a laptop right now. i gave a 15" sony vaio to my ex-girlfriend and got a black 13" macbook and honestly never found the size difference a problem. 15" is a pain for lectures and is generally pretty weighty. i hate anything smaller than 13" in that 'notebook' category, but i've never honestly found 13" lacking. osx makes multi-tasking and window-switching super easy anyway (+ with gestures and touchpad stuff...) so it's not as if it feels cluttered or hard to navigate/organize. for anything that exceeds a 13" screen for working, there's the desktop back at home/accom.

Ah fair enough, I was thinking that it would be your only computer. I forgot you also had a desktop.

13" seems adequate for most students as an only-computer, anyway. macbook 13"'s are literally full-width screens, remember, no annoying plastic framing or space-constraints. and osx really is a joy to use for multi-tasking - or at least the standard student type tasks, anyway. i find it faster to navigate around on my small macbook with touch-gestures than i do on my windows machine, tbh... a quick swipe of the finger on a touchpad is a lot quicker than a mouse+keyboard deal.
