I think he's shite in anything else I've seen him in, that national treasure film actually made me angry it was so bad.

I liked Gone in 60 Seconds despite him. I loved the cars and the Sphinx character.

He plays the same character in every single movie. Seriously, he's the worst.
Like I said: He just needs the proper roles. In LLV, the role of suicidal drunk was perfect for him because of his acting style. He's not a good actor as in someone who can play a multitude of roles (like some would say about Christian Bale), he's more of someone who has a specific type of persona, and portrays it perfectly. I think Mark Wahlberg, who is another fantastic actor who gets caught up in shitty movies.
I like Wahlberg.

There are few constants in this world but one of them is this: if Nicholas Cage is in a movie it's going to be terrible. It's not because he gets bad scripts. It's because he's awful.
So true, did you ever see The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. It's possibly one of the worst films I have ever seen.

Constantine - 8/10

Many people don't seem to like it.. I think it's one of keanu reeves' best films.

Cage is nothing exceptional. In fact, he should be thanking his lucky stars that he has had the roles he has. By any measurable acting critique he is horrible. Is he convincing? No. Is he dynamic and versatile? No. Does he make you forget you are in a theater watching a movie? No. .. those are things that a good performance artist will do.

Early on in his career he was fortunate enough to have scored a few roles in movies that turned out to be blockbusters. However, those movies had little or nothing to do with Cage's performance. He now has the advantage of name recognition, and name recognition goes a long long way in hollywood.

Cage isn't pigeon holed into the same horrible roles. He is put there with the sole intent of garnering an audience that truly doesn't understand or put much weight into the art of acting. Cage has had opportunities to show off his craft. I could name a half dozen movies with good screenplay, directing, and a great supporting cast. What is wrong with all of the roles? .. just the fact that Nick Cage played them.

He's out of his league.

I re-watched HBO's Rome while I was taking a Roman Civ course with a prof who does specifically Roman archaeology. The show had many accurate nuances of Roman life which I was able to identify to my course readings. For that I enjoyed the show. My biggest gripe were the British accents. I want a film or show set in Rome to be done in Latin.

He's out of his league.
Cage is his own pigeon hole. He overacts his roles characters with too much seriousness for the subject matter. But there are some cases where this is a desirable asset (Kick-Ass, Moonstruck, etc). He's not the best actor ever, but he's instantly recognizable.

Max Payne, The Happening, Planet of the Apes? He's had his share. Just as Cage had his share of great movies - Adaptation, LLV, and arguably Kick-Ass. Though obviously the ratio between the two is different as Wahlberg's been lucky enough to get into a Scorsese movie.

I think the only Nicholas Cage movie where he actually added something to it was Lord of War, although i believe that there are other actors that could have played it just as well or better

I don't see anything wrong with reviving a dead language for a movie for curiosity's sake.

e: Finding actors fluent in them or willing to learn, however, is different.
