High Plains Drifter is one of my favorite movies of all time (not part of the trilogy I know)

I prefered a few dollars more.
And of course GBU gets 10/10

the spaghetti westerns were good for what they were, an italian directors vision of how the west was - i thoroughly enjoyed them, it's just i didn't see them as perfect movies.
perfect movies have tits in them.

Ahh well, yeah. I just think The Man With No Name is the best character the movie industry has produced.burnzz wrote:

Actually, they were filmed in Spain. In fact, the scene in GBU where Blondie and Tuco blow up the bridge, that was done as a training exercise by the Spanish Army, which Leone was allowed to film for the scene.m3thod wrote:

Im going in to the second season of rome now and I have to say I am largely unimpressed.lrishpride wrote:
Finished watching Rome. Epic.
Somebody please recommend me a similar series. Not too much to catch up and not more than 4 seasons.
Currently download Spartacus
Comparing Spartacus and Rome doesn't make sense. I question wether those that do have actually watched them both.. beyond an episode or two. Aside from being set in the same era, there isn't much to compare at all. Spartacus is centered around one house, and the arena... whereas Rome is focused on the political whole of the empire.

If you told me that you've watched either show just once i'd be spectacularly surprised. Tbh i wouldn't have thought those types of suspense dramas your cup of tea to begin with.Uzique wrote:

I really don't see the appeal in either series tbh.
The classical period is such a fantastic time to stage a movie / series in but they all seem to fuck up. Bad dialogue, mediocre actors, bad fighting scenes (terrible filming mostly)... HOW
A movie about Crassus in Parthia f.ex. would be absolutely great to watch. Yet all we get stuck with is this drama bullshit or over the top 300 stuff...

Gladiator did alright.
That classical period has a lot of potential, I'll admit that. But to say they all sucked? I liked the over the top action. I love all those classical stories and have read quite a few of them, but I don't feel that all those movies and tv-shows rape the story and even if they do, I don't care.
It's true that could do so much more with them, but i don't mind what we have now

Well usually I'm all over that but once it's set in Roman era it just loses it's appeal.
don't get me wrong though, I loved 300, just wish that for once they'd come up with a good story / good filming using the period.

Well, 300 was based on a comic, but I get your point.dayarath wrote:

It's based on folklore, so you're going to get folklore. It's the same over the top stuff you get with asian films with wires ..etc. If you go into these movies/shows knowing that, it makes them more tolerable.

it's not a suspense drama. it's a lowbrow shitty cash-in on the back of movies like 300, and it's nothing but whimsical, gratuitous nonsense for geeks and people with a passing interest in ancient history to get a boner over.Kmar wrote:

Suspense drama is exactly what it is. .. although it might be some of the other things you mentioned. Its funny you mentioned people who watch these shows have a passing interest in history. Spartacus was recommended to me by someone who has a passing interest in history and knows I also like history. I guess there are people who do feel better informed by watching those types of shows. However when you try to talk in depth about ancient rome (or whatever) it is complete fail. .. that sounds a little pompous, but whatever. Its true. Have you ever had to try and balance the line of accuracy and not sounding like an arrogant ass? Yea, I usually let them think what they want. HBO is rewriting history. History is pop culture. .. I guess.
Xbone Stormsurgezz
i do agree that HBO know what they're doing... but i don't know. i guess i just feel like other posters above - that so much more could be done with the period. you don't need to make it historically accurate or docu-drama like... but the real history provides some amazing stories, events, narratives and human drama. reducing rome and shit down to a series of poor clichés and lazy stereotypes just comes across to me as a bit uninspiring and just unentertaining, generally. i don't feel compelled or intrigued enough to watch it. it'll just be the same gratuitous gladiator violence, nude scenes and shitty bacchanalian excess. nothing that we didn't know and nothing that we weren't entertained by in ninth grade history class. a massive amount of potential but a clear lack of talent and real effort.
