Yes, which dumb, since when did shooting out the tracks cause a tank to explode?
Since when did stabbing someone's foot once cause them to die instantly?

Gas knives.

But really, its not to hard to program a little realism into a game, hit to the tracks disables tracks etc.

Why would you do that when this game isn't supposed to be THAT realistic?

Because it's a cool feature that improves the game without making it overly realistic..?

There's no cons to what dilbert is proposing.

it would make tanks really fucking useless if any random hit to the tracks would disable it.

Exactly. If you have two AT/engineers who know what they're doing they can take out a tank in short time without a lot of effort anyway. Encouragement of teamwork and all that.

No, they can't. Not in bf2 anyway.

Not disable but damage. Slow it down, etc.

Specific areas being damaged and then having an effect relative to that area makes sense, moreso that some arbitrary health bar with the vehicle performing the same at full health as it does at 5% health. Other examples are shooting a cars tires out, or damaging a helicopter tail rotor.

I agree, hits should disable

but they should be able to quickly be repaired by engineers for pacing...

Of course they can. Just a little trickier, takes a bit more skill.

2 ATs can take out a tank, yup...

just switch firing positions

A tank that when hit once or twice retreats around the corner, fixes, then comes back and knows pretty much where you're going to pop out from?

Nah

I miss BF knifing. I was playing Bf2142 the other day, and I got two knives on some guys. It was interesting to have to actually aim and be up close as opposed to 3m away, hit a button, and auto-aim lunge into the enemy.

That's because it's a console port.

I don't think adding damage hard points to tanks is going to add much to the game except unneeded hassle for tankers. Aircraft, however, would be more interesting if you could, for example, blow the rotor on a chopper and watch the thing spin out. Epic even by arcade standards.

Now that I think about it, I've put some thought into this before. Instead of the classic burn a bit and then 100% explode, how about a chance to disable after burning a bit? Couple that with a high chance of death if you exit the vehicle before it's done moving (aside from ejection seats), and you could introduce a whole new crash landing mechanic into the game? Give disabled vehicles thirty seconds before they explode so as not to unduly interrupt vehicle spawning. Team points for safely bringing a disabled vehicle to a stop, plus one for every surviving passenger just to motivate people a bit.

The heli's in BC2 already do this. There's a good chance DICE copies that feature to BF3..

It wasn't epic enough in BC2. I think it would be a lot cooler if you know you're fucked in a vehicle when it's burning or spinning out of control. To do this just don't let them bail out

Would be epic watching the crash from inside the cockpit.

Exiting vehicles and dying if they're moving would remove C4 jeeps.

Which was why I figured on bailing out (in non-jets) only when the thing stops moving and, if a helicopter, it survives the landing. Else, apply a % chance to die. That way, you have the mechanic of deciding whether or not to try and land the thing or taking your (puny) chances at jumping out.

it's a fast paced sandbox shooter.  how technical do we need to get with vehicle kills?  players and tanks respawn, there's no point in making damage overly complicated.  An Immobilized tank is dead anyways and any real tankwhore would finish off the tank and then kill himself to start fresh.  and i think they made the tracks the weak spot in bf2 becuase they're fairly small targets.  heavily armored killing machines need weak spots to maintain balance.
