Afghan intelligence officials, the police and tribal elders say British aid worker Linda Norgrove would have been alive today if the international forces had paid heed to their advice.

But an officer working for the National Directorate of Security, Afghanistan's spy agency, said while a delegation of mullahs, tribal elders and village chiefs was despatched to the area soon after her capture to negotiate with the militants, the coalition forces bombed several nearby locations, forcing the delegation to halt their mission.

He said he had personally requested that commanders of the coalition forces allow the elders to talk to Ms Norgrove's captors, but the permission was denied.

A local influential mullah from Khas Kunar district said he had spoken to tribal elders in Dewagal valley to put pressure on the militants to release Ms Norgrove.

He said direct and indirect talks were held with her captors and they were told that taking a woman hostage was against the Afghan culture and a violation of the tenets of Islam.
He said the captors were told that Ms Norgrove was an unarmed aid worker who was helping poor Afghans in the area and that she posed no threat to anyone.

He said Ms Norgrove would have been walking free today if the authorities had given the elders and the locals a chance.

But they instead relied on force, which doesn't really work in Dewagal, he said.

Monday Morning Quarterback much?
Missions go well, missions go to shit. And often enough, it's the strangest little coincidences that make the difference.

Dilbert, as our self-identified resident Combat Engineer, can you tell me how you'd get through the front door of the first objective on a properly done hostage rescue?
No need to plan the whole rescue, no need to verify the target location, no need for lanes of fire, no logistics, no transportation issues, no opsec issues.  Nothing but tell me how you'd get through the first door, alive, and in a condition to continue the mission immediately.

It can be non-dynamic, like knock knock, "Avon Calling!".  But how do you get past the front door, and in a position that's favorable towards the overall mission of rescuing the hostage?

Note: yeah, I've figured out Dilbert isn't actually a combat engineer, it's just some further bit of "lulz" for some obtuse reason.

Thing is, you're focussed on the mission. You have a hammer, all problems need to be hammered. There are other options.

A bit of smarts and the necessity to conduct the missionat all, with all its inherent risks, could have been avoided.

Combat Engineer - Same as Combat Medic in another thread.

Now explain why someone would throw a grenade in a hostage rescue.

Personally I would have hid the assault team along the side of the building and then drove an ice cream truck slowly down the street waiting for the Muslims to come out of the building the assault team would wait until they ate the cyinide laced cherry poppers then snuck in the building wearing the dead Muslims clothes...........

cause he's subtly provocative and smug in his assertions

dibert knows his shit on certain things; regarding the other multitude of things he doesn't have a fucking clue about, he likes to think reading a few internet articles and bullshitting will make the difference. and, if not... well then he'll just hang around your posts/threads for a few weeks to remind you of his 'opinion' on the matter, anyway. hooah!

Yeah talking's really worked in the past with those people hasn't it.

Chances were she wasn't going to be released not matter how much the elders chatted, and they had information suggesting she would be taken into Pakistan. Who was going to secure her release then? The Pakistanis?

I get the impression you had your fingers crossed for something to go wrong just so you can use it as your sweeping example.

Hey Dilbert: How about you let the after-action investigation figure out just what actually happened before you start determining what went wrong and casting blame--without any background, training, information, intelligence, time in country, etc, etc, etc? mmmkay?
