He said the captors were told that Ms Norgrove was an unarmed aid worker who was helping poor Afghans in the area and that she posed no threat to anyone.
He said Ms Norgrove would have been walking free today if the authorities had given the elders and the locals a chance.
But they instead relied on force, which doesn't really work in Dewagal, he said.

Dilbert, as our self-identified resident Combat Engineer, can you tell me how you'd get through the front door of the first objective on a properly done hostage rescue?
No need to plan the whole rescue, no need to verify the target location, no need for lanes of fire, no logistics, no transportation issues, no opsec issues. Nothing but tell me how you'd get through the first door, alive, and in a condition to continue the mission immediately.
It can be non-dynamic, like knock knock, "Avon Calling!". But how do you get past the front door, and in a position that's favorable towards the overall mission of rescuing the hostage?
Note: yeah, I've figured out Dilbert isn't actually a combat engineer, it's just some further bit of "lulz" for some obtuse reason.

Chances were she wasn't going to be released not matter how much the elders chatted, and they had information suggesting she would be taken into Pakistan. Who was going to secure her release then? The Pakistanis?
