4-5-6 seem to be the most common for anything not ultra stylized.
I think your perception of anime is probably skewed due to Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball Z. Sure there is some anime that is pretty questionable but that doesn't discount the good anime that does exist, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Gungrave and a few others for instance.11 Bravo wrote:

The best trait (it that's the right word) of anime is the ability to easily have settings and stories that are impossible or would be extremely expensive to do in live action. To be able to make a movie that encompasses space, the past, the future, deserts, jungles, giant robots, aliens etc. all at once would cost millions of dollars, now if it was animated the cost would drop dramatically and the narrative would be able to go to new/different places quickly.
There are some very adult, and very mature anime out there that is completely foreign to Sailor Moon, Bible Black, etc. People are just too stupid and get hungup on the fact that it's animated to appreciate it.
That said I haven't actively watched watched anime since Gungrave back when I was 13, but if Spirited Away or Akira was one I would sit and wtch it TBH. In any case, I probably just wasted my time typing this out...
