Sending in conventional forces to fight a guerrilla war was the same mistake the US military made in Vietnam. Officers know the quickest way to advance ranks in the military is to get a combat command they can put on their resume so no matter how little sense it made, it was inevitable that we would be sending in ground forces instead of what we should've done. This was to allow the Afghanis to fight as our proxies while we sent SF teams up into the mountains to hunt down Al-Quaeda. When we inevitably pull out of Afghanistan in defeat, all blame should rest at the feet of the Pentagon.
