Because these guys:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d2/The_Pentagon_US_Department_of_Defense_building.jpg/300px-The_Pentagon_US_Department_of_Defense_building.jpg

Went here:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ab/USArmyWarCollege.gif

And studied this:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9e/Gettysburg_Battle_Map_Day3.png/350px-Gettysburg_Battle_Map_Day3.png

and this:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/92/P23%28map%29.jpg/300px-P23%28map%29.jpg

Instead of this:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5a/Montcal_trying_to_stop_the_massacre.jpg/792px-Montcal_trying_to_stop_the_massacre.jpg

And these guys want a combat command:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c5/US-O6_insignia.svg/70px-US-O6_insignia.svg.png

So they can earn this:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/23/US-O7_insignia.svg/35px-US-O7_insignia.svg.png

So we send:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b9/Abrams-transparent.png/300px-Abrams-transparent.png
and
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f7/1BFV01.jpg/300px-1BFV01.jpg

To fight:

Sending in conventional forces to fight a guerrilla war was the same mistake the US military made in Vietnam. Officers know the quickest way to advance ranks in the military is to get a combat command they can put on their resume so no matter how little sense it made, it was inevitable that we would be sending in ground forces instead of what we should've done. This was to allow the Afghanis to fight as our proxies while we sent SF teams up into the mountains to hunt down Al-Quaeda. When we inevitably pull out of Afghanistan in defeat, all blame should rest at the feet of the Pentagon.

They should have studied the Russian invasion of Afghanistan too imo.

I had to laugh out loud. This is great. Arggh 24 hour waiting periods!

Mountainous people have a history of being difficult to defeat.

So how should we go about this? Leave immediately, or phase out?

Train up the Afghani army that we've allowed to grow fat, lazy and corrupt and gradually turn the country over to them. They should be a lean mean fighting machine in charge of their country by now, and would be if we hadn't come in and taken over with our own ground troops.

Nice OP.

As I said in another thread, a handful of CIA with a few million dollars managed to defeat the Russian military in Afghanistan, the Pentagon has spent trillions and barely made one step forward against the Taliban - tribesmen with small-arms.

Afghans don't give a shit about national identity.  If that's the approach, it's a waste of time.  We'd be better off just paying the enemy to not fight, like we did/do in Iraq.

1. We don't have that kind of money.
2. Afghans are not like Iraqies. Afghans will take the money and buy more sophisticated weapons to fight us.

Yeah but the warlords are the enablers. They are the elders who advise the younger generations to support or oppose either the US or Taliban. I agree that paying the Taliban wouldn't work.

I see yes, you are correct. But even paying the warlords have not gained us that much.

that's the point, there is no other approach.  I'm not assuming that the world is full of wannabe americans, but our current goal is to "stabilize" afghanistan.  There will never be a stable afghanistan, by our definition, because the afghanis don't give a shit about a stable afghanistan.

We'd be better off changing the goal and then the approach.

Joking john. The books "sabre squadron" and "green berets" paint a similar picture.

Time to pull out and let the pmcs expand and take over the slack from the ana.

Depends what you mean by 'stable afghanistan'
Multiple stable regions could work, afghanistan as a whole is too large and varied to be united.

Pretty much...  Either kill 'em all or get the hell out.  That's the only way to resolve this.

Because we can't stomach wiping them off of the face of the earth, we'll never win there.  So, the next best option is to just leave and let the bastards kill each other.
