Doesn't really feel like it needs a performance increase, but I won't be turning it down.

Installing an OS Update, would that require a full restart or is it just like a service pack install on Windows (IE I keep all my shit)?

Froyo has been great so far on the Nexus One. A slew of small bug fixes, snappier navigation and browsing, and finally they enabled the multi-coloured trackball feature. There are a bunch of tethering features that I haven't messed with yet. Nothing disappointing in that update.

Apparently it's just been rolled out for unlocked Desires, but O2 are holding back a few weeks for extra testing.

I don't mind

Nice changes for the Desire, IMO.

Texting, as in, improved word-typing accuracy?

Cos I find the keyboard for mine still isn't too awesome. Doesn't feel refined enough.

Hopefully this sorts it, anyway.

480 x 800

and the width value 'x' however many home screens you have

So for 5 I think 2400x800 would work

Barnicle wifi tether and pdanet for usb or bluetooth tethering (bypasses carrier offering which demand a monthly subscription)

Music player called "cubed", step up from the default.

Mortplayer for audiobooks.

I actually paid for Xtralogic RDP client. Easier to RDP and browser sometimes then to use the phone tbh.

So, what Android phone is worth getting nowadays?

I've been trying to read up, but there seems to be a decision of whether to go for a 'pure' android phone or one that's edited e.g. Sense UI.

Seems that edited ones take forever to get updates? Any compatibility problems with apps etc? I'd be more inclined to go for a smaller phone than the massive iPad-like things, and have been eye-ing up the X10 mini. The biggest SE's are way too big, anyway..

HTC Desire or HTC Desire HD

go to carphone warehouse or somewehere similar so your handset is somewhat vanilla and not carrier branded (who like to add more bloat to the OS).  I get my driod updates a lot earlier than any of the carriers branded phones.

Only the nexus one comes with the the pure android UI experience, although this looks likely to change as google is looking to provide a seamless UI in all driods as part of future updates.
