Yeah, I was at the checkout and the whole store went dark, then 2-3 seconds later, the backup generators kicked in, and the lights came back on.. took about another 10 mins for the checkout computers to boot up and get functional, they were running Win2K lol.SEREVENT wrote:

The pain is from the fact he's a 85 year old man who had all of his ribs broken so they could get to his heart. They put him under for the op obviously, but it was the second time they had to do it in like 3 months, so he's been sore as fuck.Uzique wrote:
pain? they're under anaesthetic... where's the pain? you mean anxiety? we all have anxiety.JakAttaK wrote:
Yeh this is true, it just makes me angry. He's going to see the doctor who suggested he had the op sometime this week, find out why it hasn't had any effect. I feel so bad for him, put through so much pain for pretty much nothing.mtb0minime wrote:
Well... it was worth a shot right? Better to have tried it and realize it didn't work than to not try at all and have to wonder 'what could've been'
plus you didn't even have to pay for it and im guessing it probably cost £50k if it's a heart-operation.
my grandad is going to have a triple-heart bypass next week... why does it matter if it works or not? better than not trying at all.
finray if you honestly think that katie perry is one of the most gorgeous people in the world then you're dumb as fuck. she's just a pop-star. there are far better looking women out there than some bitch with an expert make-up team put on stage to sing.
And thats what my grandad had
EDIT- Yeh I'd rather them try if there is a chance of it succeeding, I just feel bad for the guy.

hahaha.
what are we supposed to take from you 'dissing' the operating systems of a fucking supermarket, finray?
that it's not cost efficient to upgrade thousands of computers to a new OS it doesn't need?

jak your grandad could just say 'no' to the op and risk death... no one's forcing him to have his ribs broken. i don't get the attitude - obviously i understand you're anxious or upset for him, for what though? who's fault? the state just spent £100k+ on your gramps in a few months for 2 ops that weren't successful... if it's such a big hassle, why'd he have it?

Katie perry isnt mega hot but he has a ton of sex appeal.
like borderline would rape even with consequences sex appeal.

I just found it funny that a store that was built after the release of Vista was using such an old OS, I was expecting at least XP.Uzique wrote:

hey, he's 85. that's a good deal older than my grandad who is in the same situation.JakAttaK wrote:

two free operations, two free chances given through the funding and efforts of a lot of other people/specialists to give your 'ole man bonus years to his ripe-old age. it's a win/win really from any objective standpoint. obviously of course though i know where you're coming from emotionally. but damn anyone would be happy to reach 85, with or without ops.

Ah I don't mean there to be an attitude. I'm happy we have to pay fuck all for it, and I'm happy he had the op cause there was a chance it could work. I'd definitely rather try than leave him be. Just yeh. I'm not blaming anyone, it just sucks that it didn't work. His friend had the same op and he was perfectly fine after, so my grandad is seems to be in the minority of people it does nothing for.Uzique wrote:

Good luck to your grandad btw
EDIT- Yeh I'm happy I've managed to spend so much time with him tbh. My dad didn't know either of his Grandparents, so to know mine for 18 years and hopefully a couple more is amazing.

we gotta upgrade every check-out pc for the handsome license cost of £75
the new taskbar is tooooo kewl

It wouldn't have been upgrading, it was a brand new store circa 2007 (iirc) so they would have had to buy an OS anyway.Uzique wrote:

dude you do realize companies that use tons of copies of an OS get a license that extends across their entire company?
i.e. it would cost them nothing to put the OS they've already forked-out heftily for.
and they're not going to fork-out for a new huge company/corporate license until there's an actual point.
i.e. when they need a better OS to fucking add-up grocery costs.
sometimes i swear you don't even think. 'the building was built after vista and after the release of dx10 and the nvidia 280GTX, therefore i do not understand why their new computers, which after all they were building and buying brand-new, did not take advantage of this new technology'. cost efficiency. thank god you're not running any companies into the ground with pointless tech-geek hard-ons.

Lmfao where did I say they should have a GTX 280 or Vista or DX10? Most companies made the upgrade to XP, I was surprised Sainsburys didn't. And yes, I did know they get a company-wide license.Uzique wrote:

clearly they got their company license before that and it's not cost-effective to upgrade to a newer, more useless OS.
i love tech-geeks. they look at the every-day practical working world around them and guffaw and sneer because it doesn't conform to their ridiculously-niche, hobbyist-nerd world of overclocking and brand-new technology and maximum performance. not everyone (or every company for that matter) uses computers to get 100% speed and 100% performance. if it does the job and it's cheap, then it's for-all-purposes FINE.
