At the peak of BF2 days. We saw shelves full of variety of different games but now-a-days .... barly anything. 5 years ago the internet would be buzzing with news of a new game coming out or new hardware but this present day .... theres just a whisper.

Do you think we are seeing the slow death of PC games ?

In 5 years are we going to see the total take over of consoles, leaving PC in purgatory

I think it's just the death of heavily advertised games on PC.

we're seeing much more digital sales than retail sales. Sales aren't dwindling themselves.

Quality-wise we're seeing the death of gaming in general tbh.

BC2 isn't even worth the cost of the game.

Consoles will become more like pc's and pc's more like consoles until there is no such thing as either and every game, household appliance and every aspect of our lives will be run off one machine that does it all.

It's not the death of PC games. The trend towards accessibility and "fair" games has caused game developers to focus on making games that let the players feel they're doing well from the first time they play. Games like BF2, UT, CS, and the like are all incredibly hard on new players and give experienced players the chance of actually getting good at the game. If you dumb down your game so new players can get into it easier and old players are not so willing to stick around, then the game itself and more importantly its sequel(s) are much easier to sell. Then there's the fact there are loads more gamers who are a lot more casual overall. They simply don't want to have to actually learn the game. Their attitude is often "I have a right to win" and devs are willing to support this.

would it take something like BF3 ( if done correctly ) to pull them out of this slump and re-energize the PC games

There is an ever increasing trend that AAA titles are developed primarily on consoles and development on the PC is secondary. However, the PC will always be king of high-end graphics.

I don't believe it is because the PC market is shrinking, more-so that the console market is expanding and it is more profitable to release a tittle on multiple systems. One example of this would be the id tech 5 engine, for Rage, which has been built in mind to work on any platform without having to be ported. It will work naturally on the PC and consoles, as well as Mac and theoretically on Linux. They just have to write up an executable for Linux. Porting would be limited to hardware capabilities and local controls.

doubt that would do it.

They need something to unify it. If Valve started heavily hyping shit and spending money on exclusivity they could make it more popular.

Microsoft and Sony have almost control of their platforms, PCs are very different.

I think hype is more detrimental. We are all expecting games to provide something great that we don't even know we want, and they fall short of expectations too often. Why even bother with hype these days.

why bother? maybe because it massively increases sales?

CoD6 was hyped the shit out of and despite being a dismally bad game it made shitloads.

Making good games doesn't make money, advertising games makes money, signing exclusivity deals makes money.

I was referring to consumers, not companies marketing. Low quality games can become profitable if marketed well.

Considering how you don't like nearly every fucking game, why should serem take advice from ya?

Depends on how that'll turn out, I have low expectations for that game.

Edit: as for the "I wanna win" thing, I also am mad that devs are catering to that croud when really those people need to grow some brains and cooperate with their team.

Slow death of PC games?

I seriously doubt there will be a day when all game creators say "sorry guys, we're not making games for PC anymore, it's consoles all the way".

Maybe the quality or standard hasn't been to some people's tastes or expectations, but certainly there will always be great games released.

And I'm saying all this having grown up as a console player from when I got my first NES back in 1987.

It all comes down to profit.  Are PC games really as profitable as games on consoles?

They probably have analysts working on this question all the time, but from what I can see, it is much more profitable for any game to be multi-platform (which, for PC gamers, is bad news).

Why should developers limit themselves to only making PC games?  They won't... not because the game is going to be better if it is multi-platform, but it will also make 2x, 3x the money.

For console gamers, such as myself and lots of other ex-PC gamers, it is much cheaper to put money down on a console once every five years than to have to constantly upgrade a PC just so you can run a game the best way possible.  It's expensive, to be honest.

Did they already say that BF3 will be PC-only?  Because I find that hard to believe unless someone actually said so.

tbh it's quite easy to put down money on your PC every 5 years and still run everything well.
