bailing someone out of jail

a long story short, my friend called me up late at night a few months back and begged me to come and bail him out of jail

he said he could pay me the money back that night
he just needed someone else to call the bondsman because the cops wouldnt let him do it himself

after much arguing i agreed

now his court date is coming up and i have heard from mutual friends that he is planning on leaving the state and not showing up for his court date.

when I bailed him out I had to sign a bunch of stuff along with giving the bondsman 15% of his bond which came to $750

the guy did give me the money back that night plus another $500 for my trouble

my question is can I get into any trouble if he doesnt show up for his court date ?

I have called around and was given many different answers.

Depends what you signed - the thing to have done would have been to drag your friend in, get him to sign new paperwork and tear up yours.

I'm not positive but I think it depends on the state as far as you're concerned. Out of curiosity, what was the charge? If he flees the state to avoid going to court, it's a federal felony which is probably much worse than what ever it is he did.

the charge was shop lifting but ti was over 200 bucks so it was a felony

he is also on prob for other stuff

i dont care about the guy

i am just worried about what can happen to me

I mean i am not the guys care taker or guuardian or anything you know

how can i control what he does ?

i thought about dog the bounty hnter when i typed this plus dog was on the tv when i typed the thread

im not to worried because i havnt done anyting illegal

i just wanted to know what you guys think or know

Nothing can happen to you, the worst would be getting contacted about where he is or something but you aren't legally responsible for him showing up or anything like that

You haven't done anything illegal with the state. The paper work you filled out might give you some problems with the bail service, but I couldn't tell you since I don't know what's on it or what their terms were. The idea of the bail money is to make it costly for whoever posted the bail to let the person escape. The state doesn't particularly care who posted it, as long as the person it was posted for is brought to court. In the end you might be out of some cash, but there shouldn't be any real legal repercussions.

You should contact the bondsman ant tell them that you think you friend is planning to to flee the state. Im pretty sure there is something they can do about it. Maybe they can get him arrested again...

proto, since you're in nc and I live and worked with a bondsmen as a chaser for awhile in nc

as the signer of the bond you're responsible for the skipper ... you fronted the money at the time of the bond, so you take legal responsible for his actions

now if he doesn't show all they're going to do is come to you first and ask questions on current whereabouts and why you failed to escort him proceedings
