Kudos to liquidat0r for "paving the way" to this thread

Post Your CD Collection (with pictures hopefully)
ACTUAL CDs, that you OWN and have in your possession (I don't care how many albums you have on your computer that you downloaded)

I guess this is a lot? I've always lived in the shadow of my parents and their massive collection. They've definitely got at least 5 or 6 times this amount.

How many is that?

20*8 + ~10 stragglers = 170.

Where do you get 'em?

I'm blessed enough to have Amoeba Music in Hollywood, a massive record store with everything you could possibly want, and lots of rarities from people trading shit in. Every time I go I have a budget of $100~$150. When I lived closer and had a job, I'd probably go once a month or every 2 months.
https://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pm4i2uFPK3on2hYX6UhuCy6FapOvzOtLzKHtztSslviFS3rzjhD0rqpPDzQ8fHWDPKu19xPB7hewAqxdHt7-xtQ/amoeba1.jpg

And this is just one section, there's still a massive back room for classical, jazz, and soundtracks, and a whole other section for electronic and vinyl.

And then there's also Amazon.com of course.

What was the first CD you got? the last?

First CD I ever got was back in 1997 when I was in 4th grade. Chumbawamba's "Tubthumper". I still have it to this day! (I never ever get rid of any CDs I've accumulated). Do I still listen to it? There are a few songs on there I listen to every once in a while ("Outsider" has probably had the most staying power with me).

The last CD I got was Autechre's Peel Session from 1995. Which is sad because I got it probably 4 or 5 months ago, and that's a long stretch to go without any new CDs. (Fortunately there are still other ways to get new music ).

If you could only listen to one of your CDs for the rest of your life, no other music, just that one album, what would it be?
(Ok, maybe you can add a runner-up as well)

Kraftwerk's "Computer World" (and this fancy pants has both the original German and English releases )
https://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pTcvuwB0q8NcCKPEx1P48FcifxUhjzgBTOfCpbTxyhfdNdp6WtUiJLrIx3_7Rs9a13dOp5Qb1ywI0DhB6D_flAQ/computerworld.jpg
It's an album that never gets old for me. My parents have the CD as well and have played it for me ever since I was a little toddler. I can remember as a youngster frequently asking them to play "Pocket Calculator" because I liked the bleeps and bloops.

Runner-up: Orbital's "Snivilisation"
https://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pq3nN9zQAAEIM0FppsTs0DlPG7vMWZthX8a91shxt-NFqfOAUC6BMloqPl_-7wt8CU0G7KVWpNFL1XAUAYwJSog/snivilisation.jpg
Maybe not the most ground-breaking of their work, maybe not the best of their work, but certainly one that I really really enjoy listening to. I listen to it a lot. A LOT. Don't judge me.

How much money have you spent on your collection? What's the most you've ever paid for a single CD?

It's hard for me to tell. 170 CDs * 10 $/CD ~ $2000 would be a good estimate, but it's probably more than that. Most I've ever spent on a single album? Not sure. Probably bought a CD that was a 2-disc'er or an import for $30 or $35. I love music and love getting lots of it, but I rarely would spend $30 for just one album; those moments are few and far between. Don't think I would ever be willing to spend more than $40 on a single CD.

Do you have any extremely rare CDs or ones that have made a long journey to get to you?

The only thing that comes to mind is a used single I got from Amoeba: The Crystal Method's "Keep Hope Alive". I was surprised to find that it was distributed only in Australia

That's all I can think of for now. If you've got any other good questions you'd like me to add (and I deem them worthy of course ), post them! (As well as discussing and posting stuff related to the rest!)

Most of my CD collection is at home. The picture below is what I have with me at uni. It consists of a couple of albums that I brought back to uni with me from home because I fancied listening to them, a couple of albums that I've bought recently and one that was given to me.

https://i42.tinypic.com/2646pes.jpg

My CD collection is really really small, mostly because I didn't really get in to music properly until a couple of years ago and have only recently discovered my musical tastes. In fact, I should think that that small pile just there is around a fifth of my CDs. I don't own any singles or EPs, just albums. My digital collection, however, is becoming rather extensive (and pretty varied).

That said, I am working on expanding my collection. I really like the idea of owning music, so over the summer I intend on going to some independent record stores, or even large chain places like HMV and buying albums that I feel I should own. i.e. albums that I've listened to a lot and would like to have on CD. I've noticed that places like Play.com have deals such as 4 CDs for £10 on older albums, so I'll probably place an order or two there too.

Just out of curiosity and if I get bored I might try and estimate how much it would cost me to buy me entire digital music collection. I should think it would be most of my student loan, heh.

Music is expensive to buy, especially for a student, so I do download quite a lot. That said, I try to do my bit by going to live music events (local bands as well as bigger events and festivals), sometimes buying band merchandise, and buying CDs here and there.

I really do not like buying digital copies of music (i.e. iTunes). If I'm going to pay then I would much rather have something physical. Perhaps that's silly, seeing as one listens to music, not holds it. meh. I've only made a couple of exceptions to this, buying the odd track here and there because I couldn't find it anywhere else or just wanted that track in particular.

So yeah: I envy you, mtb0minime.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of digital downloading either when it comes to purchasing music. If I'm going to pay for it, I absolutely must have a physical copy with artwork and everything.

I can only think of 3 instances where I had no choice but to buy a digital copy:
1) Grand National - Cut By The Brakes (single)
2) Klovn - McKlaren (single)
3) Dousk - DIY (full album)

All it takes is time, really. Just slowly build up, an album here and there.

Didn't I buy that for you and you sent me the money on Paypal?

Then you can do one or more the following:

1) Unbox them, take a photo or two, post pictures
2) Post a picture of the boxes
3) Discuss your collection without your own photographs (perhaps with the aid of web-sourced images such as album covers)

Then post your vinyls, I'm sure matt wont mind.

I too much prefer having the physical CD. It's similar to vinyl.. there is something extra special (for lack of a better term) about putting a CD/record on, sitting down and enjoying an entire album. Whatever audio gear I get for my birthday, I hope I'll be better able to enjoy the physical medium. If it includes a turntable, I think I'll drastically expand my vinyl collection past a Biffy Clyro album and single

I'll update this post with some pics of my CDs in a little while.

Sadly, I don't have many CD's and vinyls, just some classics like Pink floyd, Dire straits, deep purple etc. I don't have much time to go to the stores, or any spare money for albums for that matter. It's something I have always felt bad about, some day I plan to gather money to buy physical copies of my favourite albums of all time.

Also, vinyls ftw.
