Im often annoyed at the total computer illiteracy the writers/producers/directors/actors show in most movies and series. Although sometimes they are just hilarious like this CSI gem:

It's more of a stylistic thing or plot device than anything. I bet on gun enthusiast forums there are links to videos showing 10 things Hollywood thinks guns can do. How about 10 things Hollywood thinks aren't affected by the laws of the universe, etc.

8. Online chats always display each character as its typed

If anyone in a film or TV show uses instant messaging, each character of a message is displayed as its typed. Not only that, but the typing is always faster than fluent touch-typists can manage and no mistakes are ever made - not once is the backspace key pressed in the entire conversation.

No IM system in popular use does this because it makes it harder to edit a response, people can see your response as you edit it, and if you accidentally type something into the chat window, such as a password for your email account, you've got time to delete it before the other person sees it.

I remember ICQ had the option of seeing text letter per letter as it was typed, but I dont think you would consider that popular

The worse one I saw from that was Enemy of the State. I remember watching that and they are able to use plain old Shop CCTV footage, then rotate the image in 3D and view it from different angles.

Also when people get hacked. In films it's "Oh no, i'll try to counter the packet-flow of infectious packets to force the hacker out! (Or some shit)" and in real life it's "Oh no!" *pulls out ethernet cable*

What annoys me is when computers can apparently design stuff with minimal human input
eg in Iron Man when he waves his hands around for five minutes and the computer designs right down to the last rivet a complete robot suit and all the technology to go with it.

Or someone says "increase the efficiency by 95%" and the computer just does it....
