omgomgomg, epiiiiiiiiiic music inbound! A lot of you are probably too young for this, but I grew up watching this movie nearly every Saturday afternoon on channel 13 (KCOP or UPN). They would show it all the damn time.

What I'm talking about of course is.... Bloodsport! With Jean Claude Van Damm. The soundtrack is 80s synthesizer music in all its cheesy epic glory.

My favorite song is this one:

The theme song you probably remember is this one:

Glad you like it (and you too Wreck!)

I can't help but feel disappointed though. It was such a great start and I was looking forward to more. They started about here,
dark&deep<------|here|------------>pop

But when their second album came around, I was hoping they'd keep going in that direction, but instead went towards here,
dark&deep<----------------|here|-->pop

I went on their myspace and they've got a 3rd album out, and sounds like they're still moving in that pop direction. So guess I'll just have to keep listening to Mooger Fooger over and over again.

I usually don't listen to this kind of music but for some reason this live recording version of "M4 Part 1" by Faunts has got me captivated, I've been listening to it constantly. I'm not even high or anything.

that's like post-rock / shoegaze / math-rock... that barely goes anywhere. cool ambience but i'd name a couple hundred post-rock bands i'd rather listen to for captivation.

the black dog - music for real airports

the original pioneers of the 'idm' sound (the precocious teenage aphex twin can step aside for the minute) deliver this ironic masterpiece. responding to what they saw as the utopian, unrealistic and ultimately unsatisfying failure of brian eno's original ambient 'classic', music for airports, the black dog subversively release a record full of dystopian, dark ambient- full of the menacing looms, the aggravation and the utter, desolate boredom of the 'real' 21st century airport. a concept album that doesn't take itself too seriously, and ultimately a bloody good ambient-electronic release. check it out.

What? Brian Eno's original was a failure? Aww helllllllllllllllllll no! Guess someone didn't read the liner notes. He talks about how it's music that if you pay attention to, you can follow it. But if you're not paying attention, you won't notice it's there. That's exactly what it did for me, and I'm surprised he managed to accomplish that.

Anyways, I'll check that out nevertheless

of course brian eno's stuff was studied and well thought-out... i think their criticism of his record was that it was just another orthodox, bland, paint-by-numbers 'ambient' album. they recognize that eno is a genius and understands the genre and how to work within its parameters better than possibly anyone else- i guess they feel the concept album didn't reach its potential. that and they wanted to present a modern-take on the gem, adding the sinister undertones present in the modern-day air commute. it's a great companion to the original, really. i don't think they intended to start any feud, or to make any super-serious criticisms of eno and his oeuvre.

here's a write-up, although i originally read about the project in the more academic and oh-so-wizened pages of WIRE magazine:

GZA/RZA are the ones i'll stand by to the death. inspectah, ghost, raekwon and method have all been releasing on-off shit.

ah ok, gotcha. Heh, when typing my response I was wary I might be taking it a little too seriously, but went with it anyway.

And I'm glad you say it's a good companion to the original, because that's the vibe I got from reading the description. Airports today are much different than they were in 1978. When listening to Eno's, I can picture myself in a place and time I never got to experience; a sort of nostalgia for something that was never there. With this, I imagine it will be the reminder of experiences, and further separate Eno's work from theirs (which is what they're after, of course).

Aleksi Perälä's last two albums have been absolute IDM CLASSICS! still releasing on the bastions-of-good-muzique: rephlex and planet mu, his last two LP's (in 2009 and 2010 respectively) have been FIYAH! essential for anyone that loves the old classic IDM sound, or the nostalgia of a bit of acid/electro! also has breakbeat/breakcore elements as well, a true throwback!

intelligent dance music / brain dance

a mid-90's/00's genre of music that was basically characterised by mad experimentalism, pushing the boundaries - mixing musical complexity and bringing electronic music back away from the mid-90's rave dancefloors and back into the bedroom; something more cerebral and thought-out. cf. aphex twin, u-ziq, autechre.

The Blood of Heroes is a collaboration project featuring Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu, Napalm Death) and Bill Laswell, with beats from Submerged and End.user and vocals from Dr. Israel. Post apocalyptic soundscapes and de-imaged electronic beats backed up with heavy guitar and bass. Features live drumming from KJ Sawka and Balazs Pandi, and sound design from film sound architect M. Gregor Filip. Powerful anthemic tracks collide with vicious drum n bass beatdowns and intersperse with breathtaking synth beauty and Aphex Twin style mezzed beats. The soundtrack to post-solarflare humanity!
