As I said, Spanish-American war.

But you must admit, Monroe Doctrine really kicked you Euros out of that part of the world.
Cuba was an ally in the Spanish American war. It should be noted that having an ally does not always mean "help" though. lol
Wars usually aren't fought mano a mano.

We would have accepted Mexican American War as an answer .

Well, Iceland.

We have complete freedom as speech as in the US, and we can swear on TV and radio without any censoring.
If it weren't for your recent economic troubles, it sounds like moving to Iceland would be awesome.

Granted, I hear your immigration policy is extremely strict anyway (not that I can blame you though).

Do you mean freedom of the press, or freedom of the speech every citizen is (should be) entitled to? I am quite free, as an individual, to comment anything of everything and almost everywhere I want to (in my country) without violating any laws. "Trueish" freedom of press is one of the positive things to live in a small and neutral country. Press can comment anything of everything and almost everywhere they want to. Does not necessarily mean this happens because the influence of our Western point of view and rest Western media.

I've read that CIA has asked several times press not to publish something that might be "harmful to nation's best interests". Wasn't Washington Post asked to delay, by CIA, publishing information about conditions of Guantanamo Bay detainees, "too early"? (I faintly remember that this was in Washington Post. I'm looking searching the news now...)

Besides, how can press be free if it has to think what customers want to read/hear? Can your press really post something radical without the fear of losing its customers? It's quite natural that you know (ought to know at least) your own press better than me, but does reading news from one source mean you have free press?

Correct me, if I am wrong.

(I like deleting posts and then posting same shit in the same place.)
Fair points...  If my assumptions are correct and you live in Switzerland, then my only counters are the following...

Holocaust denial is, for all practical purposes, illegal in your country, so that's a mark against freedom of speech (albeit a small one).  Again, it's not technically illegal, but the laws effectively allow for punishment of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laws_again … witzerland

The other thing of note is that Switzerland recently banned new construction of minarets.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minaret_co … witzerland

Again, this is a small encroachment on the freedom of religion, but it is still worth noting.

yep well we can all agree the USA is really good at killing people, you've got that down to a fine art. Top o' the world!

Shame there's more to life than destroying it, but still, well done! https://www.dogsonacid.com/images/smilies/appl.gif

Seriosuly, that post about 'greatness' being totally subjective is a good one. The USA isn't a 'great' nation, you could argue - possibly no nation actually is, objectively. Definitions, definitions.

You mean the battle that was fought AFTER the war was over?  Also, battles != a war.  And Redcoats = British btw

Every country in the world has done stuff like that, and if not now then at some point in time.  Theres nothing that makes US any better than any other countries.  How about Gitmo for one?  Real proud of your country there?

So criticism isnt allowed?

"used to"... lots of countries can claim "used to".  England "used to" control half of the world.

How about just not torturing your prisoners to the point of death?  Or is saying that total blasphemy as well...?

A) I don't know why (some) Americans feel the need to explain their "greatness". Protip: If you really are great you won't need to.

B) I don't know why non-Americans feel the need to try and bring down American pride. Are they looking for their own recognition? They are like the poor neglected step child. Yes you did a good job to.

Really what does it all matter?

I think the answer to the second part is that non-Americans get tired of the flag-waving types that often go on about how great America is.

Granted, there are several nations that are far more nationalistic than we are.

No not really. You asked why the US is considered great and we are talking about the events that involved what Americans call their Greatest Generation.
The OP was referring to the time period from 1970 until 2010. I slept quite often in high school history class, but I am almost positive that WW2 ended in 1945, so a good 25 years before 1970...

It's still valid point if approached at another angle, since the "greatest generation" are living well past 1970 and held political offices before and during that time. Aside from the fact that with social security, they were more deserving of the 'entitlement generation' brand than younger citizens, their sweat, blood and tears were involved in rebuilding the economy after the war was over.
