The opinion is very clear. To package a UI update like it means anything is stupid. The fact that developers can garner attention and thereby free advertising by anything so meaningless is detrimental to any real progress.
I don't think so. Being able to easily see which of your Steam friends has been buying which game is a great way of finding out about new games, if anybody you know plays them etc etc. It seems to be the only real new feature added to Steam and I think it's a great one.

Could care less can be a conundrum if a writer's tone isn't clear. It could mean that you care a lot, only somewhat or just a little, but that you could care less. Since I think I've made it perfectly clear what I think about giant, garish UI's, I think one could accurately detect my low opinion of GFWL-ish bubble-text updates.
