Cos that's what the military says. To be a commissioned officer in any of the services you need to attend one of the academies, do ROTC, do OCS (which requires a degree) or get a direct commission (which is for things like doctors and chaplains, who have degrees anyway). Don't ask me why, cos I can't tell ya
@LBJ yeah, I mean for enlisting into the armed forces you take the ASVAB and it tells the recruiter what jobs you're able to take (barring any other medical job disqualifiers). Then, if that job is available, you can get it put into your contract and you'll get that job. For commissioning though, it seems you make a 'wishlist' of your top branches (infantry, armor, aviation, signal, space & missile etc) and depending on your scores, grades and fitness you get something from that list.
