Thought this was interesting. It was put in recently. Yet more evidence of an upcoming colour based 'rarity' system thats been rumoured for years.

As you can see it turns the boxes yellow, which corresponds with the 'Yellow = Unique Weapon' in the colour chart, and obviously with the yellow text as well.

Plus it looks pretty funky.

I'll admit it.

The crafting system is bullshit.

I don't understand how finding items works.  I would see some people find items almost every other round, but me and my buddy didn't find anything for the entire 4 day marathon we played.

Kind of hard to craft shit WHEN YOU DON'T FIND ANYTHING!

It's completely random.

Every 25 minutes you play, you have a 20% chance of finding an unlock.

So every 125 minutes I play, I have a 100% chance of finding an unlock?

Seriously though, do those minutes have to be consecutive or is it just total playtime?

No you don't. After 125 minutes of play, you have a 20% chance of finding an unlock. They don't stack.

It's the same for hats. Every 4 and a half hours it rolls for a hat. You have a 3.5% chance of getting one. After 100 hours, you have a 3.5% chance of getting one. After 1000 hours, you have a 3.5% chance of getting one.

As far as I know it's total. It's done by player time, directly to Valve's servers. The time you've been on a particular server has nothing to do with it. You don't have to spend 4 and a half hours on a server to roll for a hat.

I think.

You need to craft like 81 items for random hat and 112 for class specific hat.

>.<

And if you want a specific weapon you don't have, say the ubersaw:

First you need 3 medic items. For a class token.

Next you need 3 items of the slot it takes. For a slot token.

Then you need 3 primary weapons to melt for some metal.

So basically, odds are if you have 3 medic items and the rest of the stuff, the saw already dropped for you - it takes eleven weapons to craft one new weapon.

IMHO class tokens should be made from OTHER classes stuff, cause if you can make a class token, then you already got tons of stuff for that class.

So you can't craft for a demoman weapon unless you already have some demoman drops...

My thoughts exactly.

I really wondered why Valve posted this on their blog when they announced crafting:
If you’re super clever, you’ll even be able to craft new items before others can earn them the old fashioned way.
Do they really mean that being "super clever" is the equivalent to own tons of duplicates, most probably got through idling?

No, but you'd have quite a high chance of finding an unlock within that time frame.

huh? If it is as you say, that you have a chance to get a hat every 4.5 hours, the probability of getting one grows the longer you play...

The probability of having one after a certain amount of time grows, but the probability of recieving one on the next drop stays the same. There's a 97% chance you'll have found a hat after 300 hours, but at 300 hours there's still a 3.5% chance of finding a hat, and many people have gone over the 1000 hour mark and still arent finding anything.

Can you get more than one copy of an item?

I got a hat in my first day of playing. Do they do anything?

Are any of the items actually worth using?

You'll get weapons (most of the time you have to unlock them, by completing a few achievements but it won't take long) that are worth using and can give you some advantages. Especially say, the spies cloak and dagger. The Medics kritzkrieg.

Hats though, change nothing but your appearance.

An appearance that you hardly see in-game at all, since this is  a FPS game (except for a few weapon animations and taunts).
