Reason?

The Hasidic community complained of the 14-block bike lane on Bedford Avenue. Leaders argued the cyclists speeding by were a safety hazard and also a moral one because T-shirts and skimpy bike shorts left too much of their bodies exposed by the strict standards of the local Hasidim.

Are these people compatible with Western Democracy/Civilisation?

Why are they allowed to do this?

---

On a side note, some protesters (themselves Jews, apparently) put the Bike Lane back themselves, only to get arrested.

lol

But seriously, in an age where certain religions from certain regions of the world are often questioned regarding their compatibility with the West, it makes you think just how much power can such people have.

Nope, extremists sects which try to impose their loony views on the rest of the population shouldn't be allowed to do so.

We had a group here who tried to mandate that on Sundays (or maybe Saturdays) all pedestrian crossings should operate automatically by timer whether there are pedestrians around or not, because jews aren't allowed to do work on their day off and that includes pressing a button.
Never mind the embuggerment to road users.

Well the whole point of the topic was that they're over reaching their boundaries and clearly bothering people

All I'm saying is, shit like this shouldn't be happening in modern countries

Well, Williamsburg is their home. Should they not have a say in how their community is run?

I like how when Muslims do it it's a problem, but as soon as it's Jews everyone is fine with it.

They really only pull things like this inside their communities. This is a bit outrageous. They have a tight wrap around their local politic and money flow. They control a lot of the business in NYC, so the city lets get away with a lot. They have their own police and ambulances. The reality is that the removal of the bike lane will not stop people from riding that route so it's not really a big deal.

People in NYC mostly don't care when the Hasids pull crap like this because they've been here for so long and have invested a lot into the city.

I don't have a problem with muslims either, as long as they are only passing rules for their own neighborhood. Williamsburg has been hasidic for well over 100 years and it wasn't until very recently that the area became trendy to move into rather than Manhattan. Now there's a bit of a culture clash but nothing over the top.

For people to close down public things such as cycle lanes just because they don't like the way they dress due to religious reasons, I find it odd that you find that acceptable and within their rights. What would you say if a Muslim neighbourhood banned Soldiers from marching through because they didn't like them? Shit like that is fucked up, they shouldn't be able to have power like that.

I thought you were the freedom type of guy anyway, what happened to all that, did you finally realise that the real world doesn't work like that then.

This has nothing to do with freedom. Cyclist are free to cycle the street, lane or no.

They shouldn't be allowed to make their own laws... If it's a safety issue than they can petition for the removal of the lanes...
If it's because people wear shorts and tshirts and show skin... then they can hug a nut...lol

Straw man on the soldiers in the muslim neighborhood so I'll ignore it

As for freedom, I believe in local government above all else. If some town here wanted to turn their public school into a creationist teaching school I wouldn't really care. If I happened to live inside the town I would bitch about it till I was blue in the face, yes, but I would concede it was their right and move. People have the right to choose how they want to live. To try to dictate a standard of behavior for everyone, no matter how progressive the standards may be, it is still removing peoples freedom to choose their own path and to form their own opinions.

Guarantee it the removal was done because of safety issues. The showing of skin bit is probably written into the piece as an aside.

I mean at the end of the day though, almost all religion can be seen as incompatible with modern values and freedoms when you get into the hardcore sects of religions, even Buddhism.

I don't see why. Religious people don't bother me, and I don't try to convert them to atheism. As long as religion is kept out of the government I'm happy.

Sorry Mek, OP fails - same type of melodramatic shit Muslims/hardline Christians/Mormons get accused of with respect to 'destroying our way of life'. A non-story.

I imagine that's his issue with it, that this is considered a non-story, yet were a Muslim to do it Fox News would have a field day.
