Gen McChrystal: Bin Laden is key to al-Qaeda defeat

McChrystal supports troop increase
The top US commander in Afghanistan has said al-Qaeda will not be defeated unless its leader, Osama Bin Laden, is captured or killed.

Testifying to US Congress, Gen Stanley McChrystal said Bin Laden had become an "iconic figure".
He said President Barack Obama's deployment of 30,000 extra troops to Afghanistan meant success was possible.
But he said the mission was "undeniably difficult" and the next 18 months would be crucial.

"I don't think that we can finally defeat al-Qaeda until he's captured or killed," said Gen McChrystal of Bin Laden.
"I believe he is an iconic figure at this point, whose survival emboldens al-Qaeda as a franchising organisation across the world," he said.

OTOH The previous admin has repeatedly said Bin Laden doesn't matter.

So would it make any difference to Afghanistan and AQ if Bin Laden were removed?

As a leader he means little in such a modular organization. As a figurehead he is a symbol of American inability.

It would be a morale boost for us and a morale blow to the opposition. Tactically it means next to nothing. It depends on the importance you place on resolve.

Well, in my original post I did try to make it serious, but it just started out so sarcastically.

If we get BL, the guy who replaces him is gonna be a lot worse I imagine. And like FM said, capturing him will do very little in the long run, but it will add a temporary morale boost for us, and crush their spirits a little bit.

I wouldn't worry so much about him at the moment, but still keep the eyes and ears open. Don't wanna fall asleep and have him wake us up again.

They will just replace him, practically causing us to go search for the next guy again...

Capture him, the organisation may be able to replace him as a position, but as a person his connections outside of radical Islamic movements are probably far more useful than those of some random Imam who's spent most of his life hiding in the mountains of Pakistan preaching insanity.

Just sayin y'know, unlike most Mujaheddin, he's from a wealthy and influential family.

Still, it would provide alot of closure for alot of people for number 1 to finally get nabbed, even if it wouldn't make much of a difference in terms of the war, it would still mean alot

Depends.

Kill him quickly and cleanly = yes.

Film him being raped by some inmates with gigantic cocks and 'leak' it onto the net.... Probably not.

Idk... I have nothing against OBL personally, I'll let size be judged by the families of the dead.

He's more of a symbol than an effectual leader, and it's very possible that he was killed by our bombing raids years ago, I doubt we'll ever truly know what happened to him.

He's probably dead, Al-Qaeda is a shell of it's former self, new terrorist organizations have begun to supplant Al-Qaeda.  We've dismantled much of the organization as is, we don't need to kill him to complete the WoT.  I'm really starting to wonder what the hell we are still doing in Afghanistan.  At this point is it purely a political move so that we aren't viewed as 'losing' the war there a la Vietnam?  Unless we have troops controlling every province it (complete control of Afghanistan and defeat of the Taliban) won't happen.  Too much area to cover with too few resources allocated.

Different administration.  No more "war on terror" it is now "man made natural disasters."  I wonder how the SEALS are doing?  Another example

It would be great to catch BO OBL.  I don't know if it is necessary.  It wouldn't hurt, but I tend to think that he's dead.

*edit  Thanks KJ

Right. Somebody else will always step up to fill that post and lead Al-Qaeda. However, it would be a significant blow and a boost to us. I guess the problem is how much effort we want to put into it and how much it is worth to us. Sorta goes along the same lines as assassinating a president.
