I remember when I was in Bergamo, there it was so.
Most of the units in the Polizia and Carabinieri use the new Alfas, also including the polizia autostradale (highway patrol).
Then in the city most of the patrol units use the new Fiat Bravos and Punots. Since they are smaller than the Alfa 159.
I'm also seeing an increasing use of the new Land rover Discovery used as police cars, which is pretty cool...i guess.
Then we have the lamest police of all the Polizia Municipale, their only job is to give tickets to cars and manage traffic, and yes they use the new Fiat Bravos and Puntos.
The Alfa 159 is the standard car for all the police units: Carabinieri, Polizia di Stato, Guardia di Finanaza, Polizia Penitenziaria.
They are wonderful cars.
There are so many of those damn things around my area in San Antonio, and almost all are those unmarked/semi-marked (where the lights are on the inside and the "police" marking is in a slightly different shade from the rest of the car) variety.
Why are so many American police so old and so out of shape. C'mon! I think military life style and physical standards should apply to law enforcement as well.

Police cars up here are generally Astra's, Focus, Volvo's and Beamer's (latter two are mostly used for motorway pursuit). Haven't really seen any other types.
ours in MA are Crown Vics, Chargers, Impalas for Boston and the state cops have a tracked APC and a corvette for the highways as well as a couple ford escapes.
