care to explain why?
The absolute newest models of the Land Rover (namely the Freelander and Discovery) are pretty good, other than they guzzle unlike any other SUV. They're just disgustingly expensive for what you get.

The 1-3 year old Freelanders and Discovery's were absolutely horrendous. Massive reliability problems, engine problems. Basically, they were pieces of shit. The 1.8 engine that they supplied the Freelanders with was a massive mistake. It made a hell of a noise because it had to work real hard to get the heavy thing moving and guzzled petrol like nobodys business. Massive problems with head gaskets in the 1.8, where they would just blow without much warning, same with the rear differential.

Land Rovers aren't in his budget anyway. They do have an amazing chassis (the newer ones) and can basically manage anything offroad and on road, but they just aren't worth the price when you can get a really good Volvo XC60 for like $10,000 less or a Honda CR-V for $30,000 less.
I wouldn't know about the old Land Rovers since i've never tried them but I know for sure the new Discovery (which my dad has just bought) is a VERY good car. It goes over holes like a tank, ride is comfortable, its quiet inside, the engine is powerful (altough in normal drive mode the lack of throttle response is pretty annoying) its great at off roading, its smart, it doesn't have the rolling feeling around the corners and plus it has two chassis, it would rip through the other car. It does drink gas like water but if you are buying land rover you are calculating the price of maintaining it.

I see a couple of problems with your choices here:

From the usage you predict, the Nissan and the Jeep will let you down massively. The Nissan has zero off-road capability (essentially just a tall, unstable car with more space) and the Jeep is probably one of the least reliable cars on the market.

I'd personally recommend going for a one- or two-year old car: cheaper, same look and still has warranty.

As for the models themselves, I'd go for an estate rather than a SUV, simply for your fuel economy and space factor in the city. Subaru is good, or you could look at a decent 2008 volvo, a Mitsu Endeavor, or a Volkswagen (Passat, Jetta or Tiguan)

budget <25k. You're not going to get a very good (read=cheap to maintain and good on gas) BMW for that money.

edit: but were it me, then yes, defo.

Sounds like a faggy nothing concept which offers all the draw backs and none of the benefits of a real off road vehicle to con urbanites and soccer mums into thinking they have safety and off road ability due to shear size to me.

If you're serious about off roading then the only way to go is a diesel automatic Toyota Land Cruiser with suspension raised by a minimum 100mm, some high profile BF goodrich tyres and a snorkel.
But I very much dough he's going to be doing any serious off road and more likely just some dirt tracks and maybe a few shallow river crossing if he's feeling adventurous. In which any car with 4wd will do, and most 2wd will cope as well, go watch the Botswana Top Gear episode if you don't believe me.

Out of the 3 chosen it's a no brainer choice to go with the forester, it'll have the best off road comfort and ability, best road comfort, best reliability, best safety and highest resale value.

It's not hardcore offroad. Hell, I've done harder offroading than that sort of stuff in my Jetta!

Finally got back from shitty work and all day the Nissan Xterra is been on my mind. Its a bit expensive but I well buy an older model around the 05 era. I agree with everyone telling me to buy a new used and been explaining it to my girl. But girls are girls and only want new. I well drill it into her head tonight with a few dozen good bumps off the head board of my bed.
As for offroading, I have a lifted Ford Ranger that I can beat the shit out of. I just want a vehicle where I can go to ski hills with deep snow on the ground and the basic dirt roads with the random creek crossing and maybe a bit of mud. Nothing crazy.

I still have a long way to go till the purchase comes. So I am going to be researching a lot
Anyone have tips on dealing with salesmen or women?

Well, here's some stuff on the actual process:

Not too specific, but all very good guidelines on the process.

Very long and detailed guide; somewhat painful to read thanks to the web design, but good information. What I found useful from here was how to form an offer off of the invoice. You'll only know how to offer if you know what they pay, which you'll only know if you can wade through the bullshit on the invoice.

Subaru makes a good vehicle as long as you don't fuck around with the maintenance.  a poorly maintained subaru will turn to shit much faster than any other japanese make.

I got ~A$3,000 off my Forester.

Rule of thumb - ask for 10% off or 10% of the price in free add-ons.

So I've had my Jeep (Grand Cherokee) for seven years and have only needed to replace the tires and brakes. Approaching 80k right now.

It's good to be paid off.

Get the Subaru: reliable, good features, good all-rounder.

Jeep: the design of the new Jeeps are terrible, the older Wranglers and Renegades were brilliant.

Nissan: what the hell is that thing?

The Subaru is the best choice. If you need to do any serious off roading, maybe consider a Suzuki Grand Vitara.
