It seems the main reason why same-sex couples want to be able to be recognized under the government as 'married' is so they can get the same benefits as married couples (e.g. visitation rights, tax breaks etc)

What I want to know is, why do married couples get these benefits in the first place? What does having a "marriage license" change in terms of the dynamics of their relationship? How are they any different after having a Justice of the Peace sign a paper than before?

More stable? At least that is the way the government looks at it.

Because they want people to reproduce.  I'm not kidding.

Why do you think they give a dependency deduction for kids?

But those kids tend to grow up to have issues...
Kids produced in a married family, hetero or homosexual, are on average much more on the stable side.

Statistically speaking married couples are a whole different animal to single people. You can't base statistics off of what every single couple is like the day before and the day after they are married.

Same reason your car insurance goes down after marriage.

100% true.

Married people = good kids = good people to take tax off.

Literally, that simple.

Shocker, I know. Probably should've used /spoiler tags to lessen the blow.

BTW, Santa Claus isn't real either.

Basically to encourage people to produce future tax-payers - hence why same-sex couples shouldn't get the tax-breaks.

Also I think its a hangover from the days when the rich used to get married and the poor didn't bother - it helped the rich keep their money.

Getting married does not guarantee kids, also having kids does not guarantee you're married. Stupid laws imo. Why not give tax breaks to people with kids, like say... the way its done here?

It's hard for me to think that way but then again I'm not American. My parents Never got married with each other and they've been together for 30 years.

I think it's supposed to encourage/promote creating a family, i.e. generate the taxpayers, producers and consumers of tomorrow. Capitalism heavily relies on steady population growth.
