But it is no laughing matter. One in four American mortgages that are "under water", meaning they are worth more than the home itself, are in California. In the Central Valley town of Merced, house prices have crashed by 70%.

We are talking a sea of undocumented workers, a unsustainable budget, failing schools, shuttering businesses and 40 some odd thousand inmates about to be released because of over crowding.

The reality is that the house of cards built since Ronald Reagan was King is now propped up with tooth picks.

The Mother OF ALL BUBBLES is bursting.

We are talking insolvency and bankruptcy of the worlds 8th largest economy.

Huge amounts of jobs are gone. Some say forever. Farmer are being killed by water nazis. Jobless benefits get extended and extended.

What are the positive signs out there again, that things aren't going to shit?

Convince me please.

I'd say it's the state's fault more.  The Governor is garbage, he needs to seriously get out of office.

California has been a mess for a long time prior to the current recession.

1) You can thank direct democracy. The people voted on a proposition that made it impossible for the state government to raise any form of tax including property and income taxes.
2) You can thank extreme gerrymandering that has left every district in the state in the control of either ultra right wing or ultra left wing nuts. The Democrats have a majority which allows them to pass legislation, but it's not enough of a majority to override the proposition limiting increased taxation.
3) This has created the perfect storm of ever increasing government size without the ability to pay for it. No one wants their services cut but they also don't want to pay for them.
4) Most people would toss illegal immigration in there as well with their drains on schools, hospitals etc. There are something like 10 million illegal immigrants in California.

The state is not fixable and needs to rewrite it's constitution. No other options exist to fix the mess they are in.

Liar loans, greed, illegals buying homes.  Just plain old correction.  Nothing new here.

No. California is actually a very important lesson. It's a microcosm of the US as a whole, especially now with the Democrats controlling the entire government. Pelosi is a product of California politics, she represents the most liberal district in the entire US and she's currently running the show.

You should be paying close attention because if Californias problems spread and if the current government learns nothing from the crisis there we will be looking very seriously at the breakup of our nation.

We're talking GDP here.

In this map, each states name has been replaced with the name of the nation it's GDP most closely resembles.

The other day my mom was telling me that our family is finally decently financially stable. (I thought we always had been all along, but I guess now it's more than ever).

Unless she's got at least two years worth of wages sitting in a bank account (or better yet, in gold) there's always more she can do to protect herself

yes i know i have seen that map.  my point is that is like 1930's germany saying they have awesome beer gardens.  which is true if you ignore the rounding up of jews and such.  kind of my point.  might be a bad example but it works i guess.

Everyone laughs at the feds who let tens of millions of illegal aliens in and the liberal douchebags that coddle them. Except we aren't laughing.

red, you make simplistic assertions that lack any intellectual backing. Congrats, another thread bites the dust.

MY state is New York. I'm not bragging about anything. It is a fact that California has the 8th largest economy in the world. This has zero to do with how their government is run, or the politics present in the state. It has everything to do with Silicon Valley and Napa Valley and the fact that California provides most of the produce, beef and cheese consumed in our country. If their state economy is broken it has ramifications for every single state in this country and every country in the world.

Their government is broken. It is broke and they are scrambling to find ways to raise taxes locally. This will raise the prices of food for the rest of the country and depress our economy even further than it is currently. Again, this has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with economics. California's deteriorating infrastructure, rising prices and rising unemployment rates have and will ripple across the entire nation.

Off-topic posts deleted.

Red was trying to make points here. Just because you don't feel they are valid and/or well-stated doesn't give you the right to flame him for his opinion.

Repeatedly chanting the rules for DAST does not help anything. If you feel the rules are being violated, report the post. It is not your job to harass people about what the rules are.

Don't go off topic about what people are saying in other threads. It does not invalidate their opinion in the eyes of the forum - it may do so in your eyes, but as far as the forum and debate is concerned take every user topic by topic.

Now let's get back to California kthx, whether or not it is doomed, whether or not we are all doomed, etc.

Luckily, and I use that word loosely, we have a Republican Governor who has stopped many of the tax hikes the Democrats want to put in place.  But of course the Republican Governor agreed to a 1% increase in the State income tax in February...
