Most people don't realize how important of a battle this was.  Pretty much decided how the African campaign went.

I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

Let's just hope that we learned from the shear devastation of that war and do not repeat it.  As nice as this cemetery is, I would prefer that we not need another.

My late grandfather fought there.  He had the chance to go back and fly round in a plane from the period - for free - but didn't want to go.  The only story he ever told me about the war was how one german plane bombed the ammo truck he was driving at one point.  The bomb didn't explode, so he got straight out of the truck and ran like heck.

My Grandad fought there, was this the one with a 7km deep minefield? He was with the engineers and was one of those that had to clear a path thorough it at night using a bayonet....

It does make me wonder how I am here with the stuff my Grandad saw, seems so unlikely as to be comporable with winning the lottery!

I got all his military record and I must say it was fascinating to see all the theatres he fought in, and the human side of such a massive event in our recent history.

As a complete aside: if anyone has seen the iconic footage of the D-Day landings (British beaches) with a house and telograph line on a beach, he was in there having bacon sarnies at the time

Man, that took a while to load, but it was worth it.

It's interesting to note that the Gurkhas participated in El Alamein. They're Nepalese badasses who get shipped out from their own country just to fight. According to Wiki, they're declared a "Martial Race" by the British, which means they have a natural tendency and capability for aggression and war. Yeah, they're basically terrestrial Mandalorians.

They're still a part of the British Army I think, and they're hired as a paramilitary force over here to guard our beloved politicians.
