It's not the fact that they're white - it's that they're high tops, I just don't like the look of 'em at all. But if someone was forcing me to get them, I'd try to avoid completely plain white, it's nice to have a little splash of colour.

Because they have fibre-optic infrastructures. Instead of having web-servers 100's of miles away and providing it via telephone-line or cable, they simply build a small-scale ISP using their own servers/IT administration and then provide it to all of the local area / University accommodation via direct fibre-optic or cable lines. It's because the government splashed out on an enormous super fast network linking academic institutions, which big unis have an entry point onto.
It's not completely unlike the one I use at work (massive great class A network with a US based exit point (apple.com)), but it's a lot faster. I don't know if it's still the fastest of its kind in the world, but it's up there.
