How does one transport firearms by air?

Let's say I'm going from Virginia to Texas and I want to bring my handgun and I have a CCW. I know you can't take a firearm on the plane. Do you just throw it into your checked baggage? Or does one have to go through some special customs process?

I don't really need to know since I don't own a firearm and thus can't transport one by air, but I've always been curious.

Anyway thanks for the info. So like, do you even have to notify the agent at the baggage check counter? Or as long as it's unloaded and the magazine has no bullets, TSA won't care?

done it before with a rugar 22 ;pad lock on the handle no bullets or magazines in the same case check it in, you dont go through TSA before you check your bag in havent you ever been to an airport before silly. make sure its in a gun case too.

I've heard some airlines will allow you to transport rifles if you transport the bolt seperate to the rest of the rifle (ie. rifle in the hold, bolt in carryon luggage), but I doubt you'll be able to carry ammo. Maybe you'll have to take it to bits and carry one vital component seperately, IDK. Check your airline's website, and also the websites of the airports you'll be travelling through.

I was in San Fransisco earlier in the week and I read a sign in the airport saying that your weapon has to be unloaded, locked in a seperate case and it must go in your checked luggage.

seriously, you cant even carry a choke (shotgun insert) into carry on, why would you possibly try bringing the bolt

Unloaded, locked in a hard sided case, and declared. Bring your hardsided case (if it is small, the hard-case can be checked in your other checked luggage, IIRC).

...anyway, bring it, unloaded and cased, to the check-in counter. Tell them you have baggage to check, including a firearm (don't say "gun"). They should give you a form to fill out. It will have the date, and your signature that the firearm is unloaded. You will then take it to a TSA area, and they will inspect the case, lock it, and send it through.
