Slightly related:
I sat down with an employee (a black gentleman) and talked to him about the idea of a white couple adopting a black child. I asked him his thoughts on it. He made many statements about keeping the heritage and customs. I asked what customs, because more than likely he/she would be at least a fourth or fifth generation American. He said, "you know, street culture". I asked him what street culture had to do with anything, seeing how the family may not be living in the city. Basically his whole argument was based on fitting into the inner city culture because at some point he/she would have to interact with those people and shouldn't be made to be an outcast by them. I then asked him what the inner city culture had to offer that a family would want to teach their child, he repeated the street culture line. I kept probing to find if there was anything someone should know about the black culture so it could passed onto an adopted child. He then started talking about physiological issues such as hair care and skin care. Fair enough, but how is that different than knowing what Mongolian spots are? He did not have an answer for that.
Basically he was animate throughout the whole conversation that black culture should be taught to the child, but all he could label as black culture was the lingo, mannerisms, and body care. But black culture must be maintained.
I kept trying to get him look at it as an inner city culture instead of a black culture, but he wouldn't. I was somehow wrong in trying to take race out of it and blame the environment instead of the person. Silly Bovine.
I also made the statement that IMHO black people in general were the ones holding themselves back more than anyone else. I did clarify that I did not think racism is dead, just that the black population are doing more to hold themselves back than anyone else now.
