France Moves to Impose Ban on Burqa

The French government says it may impose restrictions on wearing the burqa, or face-and-body-covering veil, if a parliamentary probe finds the garment degrading for women. The burqa debate is dividing politicians and the Muslim community.

Government spokesman Luc Chatel became the latest politician to wade into a growing debate over the burqa in France, telling French television on Friday the government may consider curbs on wearing the head-to-toe garment if it is found to be degrading for women.

A group of nearly 60 French lawmakers are asking for a parliamentary panel to consider restrictions on the burqa, which is also called the niqab.

I've seen women driving in them. That can't be safe. You'd have no peripheral vision.

My mum forced me to go to church until I was old enough to tell her to cram it. A Muslim is free to drop their religion at anytime. Also, you can still be a Muslim and not wear that shit. Its up to the state to ensure that people can drop their religion or become a moderate without reprisals from their families. That's their job, not banning shit.

And I did get my haircut. Got brownie points so she would look after my kid while I went on the lash. I always hold back until it annoys her, then use it against her......muuuuuhahahahahah.

What is the reasoning behind the burqa anyways? To show devotion to Allah? Hardly. It's a sign of the husband's total and utter domination of the wife. These women have hardly any freedoms.

I'm not against Islam or its doctrines. I'm against a corruption of basic civil rights. Moreover, as Dilbert said, it's essentially a disguise, and extremely dangerous. You can't drive or even walk safely, and there's no telling what could be under there. Any person could wear a big cloak to hide guns or bombs or anything really, and they could not be searched. This is true of any religion; the sikh kirpan is in the same league.

Dilber't final point is the best. When in Rome, do as the Romans. France isn't muslim, and it's not going to accomodate people's wishes for it to be.

Good to see Sarko's people having a backbone.
