One of my cousins has a couple of movies on his laptop he wants to put on his iPod. Whats the best free utility around to convert the files to iPod friendly?

Sorry if this has been posted before i did a quick search and didn't find much.

Most softwares seem to be either not free or limited trials.

Quick question / hijack:

If I want to burn a video to dvd what file type / codec will it need to be to work with most dvd players? (Ie to be played through a dvd not a pc).

You can't take into account "most DVD players" because they all vary so much.

AVI is the option where you can just drag and drop the file in a burner and burn it, but it wont work on all DVD players because of the shitty software used on the player itself. It wont read the AVI file and will only be able to read a proper DVD file. There are several AVI to DVD converters out there, many of them fail, but there are some which can do the job. I don't know names because I gave up on that a long time ago and just watch it on my computer or PS3.

And is the very best there is. Though I've never tried any other, I've used it for the past 3 years and it has never let me down.

Unlike elite.mafia, though, I find the quality to be quite good. Just make sure you turn up all the settings to best quality and that you are converting in the mode specified for your iPod (it lists the models by generation and type, so if you don't know, look it up).

Surprised no one's mentioned Handbrake yet. It's free and it's got presets for converting video to an iPod friendly file.

Honestly.  It's got everything you'll ever need - converts to mp4, avi, mpeg1 and 2, preset pixel ratios and sound settings for almost any entertainment phone available, flv, mov, ts, bluray, ds, psp - you get the idea.
