According to Nielsen Online, 60 percent of Twitter users stop using it within a month, meaning that just 40 percent (on average) return after a month of signing up to it. Despite a huge increase in unique visitors within the last few months, the number of people who continue to visit the site afterwards is substantially lower than that of the competition.

In comparison to the competition, Twitter has audience retention rates almost 30 percent lower than Facebook and MySpace
, who have almost 70 percent retention rates at the moment. However, these figures were taken before Oprah Winfrey, a US talk show host, shone some light on Twitter recently. Prior to that, just 30 percent came back to the site after a month of using it.

Although the social networking website is currently enjoying unique visitor rates which are up 100 percent (this March), many believe that the site will struggle to survive if it cannot maintain a higher level of user loyalty.

I don't get twitter, maybe it's useful if you're famous but if you're not who the fuck would read your "tweets" anyway? The fact that you have to specifically click on someone's personal link just to see what they're doing says it all, the feature on facebook where you can just post a little thing and it shows up to all your friends on the main screen (you know, that thing) is much better, and it was there years before Twitter became popular

I think everyone realises after a month that nobody at all reads their shit, kinda like most blogs, and so they give up

99% of the reason I have an account is to get breaking/inside stuff from NASA.. some of which isn't even posted on their site. I tweet sporadically, but no.. not really.

It really is informative in that sense. I also have some techies and photographers on there for tips ..etc. Unless you've got something useful to offer ..meh.

I bet most of that 60% are spammers getting banned.

I signed up to see what it was like but:

- As far as tweeting for myself goes, I have Facebook for that
- I couldn't think of any (companies, people, celebrities, etc) I wanted to follow
- None of my RL friends seem to use it

I've noticed that quite a few bands are starting to use it (much like they all use myspace blogs). So that may be a persuading factor.

you don't.  once you're following someone it shows up on your "home" screen.

Most people that are on this are so bandwagon. Its not anywhere near new. It's a bit redundant IMO.

We use a service called yammer (twitter type service for business) at work but at least we have a purpose for it (logging time, etc).

From the brief forays into the realm of Twitterism that I have undertaken, it's good for two things:

Information / bulletins / factual updates.
(Shameless) self-promotion and advertisement.

Does that pretty well too, if you integrate it with Facebook and other such Web2.0 shenanigans.
