It's not a resource in this sense, it's a measure of value. How much we are willing to spend = how much we value it.

It's kinda dumb to pit one against the other. Obviously it's not as easy, but it only makes sense to rank everything that we want the U.S. Gov to spend money on, and spend money proceeding down the list until we run out. It doesn't make sense for NASA to be making the decision.
I mean this with all sincerity.. no shit. I was just saying that it would be kind of screwed up that the only species in the history of this planet that knows of the inevitability of planetary doom did nothing because their values were in other places.

Did someone say that NASA should? Did you answer the OP?

NASA already has the sources, ability, and readiness to go to the moon and start setting up a base right now (they plan to make several trips leaving "pods" etc behind every time. But, you do realize that if an asteroid like this hits, everything on earth is dead right? And, as of right now, theres only one possibility to deflect only one type of asteroid; that being a solid asteroid (which I don't think this one is, more like loosely compacted rubble) and deflected by a massive explosion (of which a 'loose' asteroid would just absorb).

If you don't think it's likely, we're actually quite overdue for a hit like this. The two of the biggest ones we've had have been the dinosaur one and the moon (yes the moon). If you don't think it's likely to be hit by something like this, it happens all the time. Hell, in all of our life times we've already witnessed it with one planet in our system (Jupiter) and if you just look at the moon, which is always the side that's always facing inward towards Earth. See all those dark spots? All are impacts. And that's just the inward side. Imagine the back side that we can't see.

It's likely enough to invest in something we don't have a solution to thats coming relatively soon instead of spending money on something we can already do (and to be honest do at the same time as researching the asteroid).

1) The Orion asteroid mission is to study asteroids in general. Not just Apophis.
2) Apophis will not kill everything on the planet if it hits (based on what we know right now). Of course there is a lot we don't know.

Only species on the history of the planet that can understand concepts like inevitability and values as well. It is perfectly valid to place more importance on issues other than planetary doom.

This implies we are passing judgment on a future decision to be made by NASA.

I thought the question was pretty simple. Of the two and if you were in the position to decide. I was asking the forum ffs .

Of the total federal budget NASA should not dictate what they get. .. Which is less than 1%. Some of which they make back in patents and servicing missions.

NASA should of course be advising the decision makers... you know the scientist?

If I was in a position to decide I would pick both lol. If I was in a position to decide I would apparently have the political finesse to make that happen.

NASA gets less than 1%, we get it. Of course this means that they received less than $29,310,000,000, that's less than 29 billion USD.

The question is whether the "needs" (read: wants) of the nation stand up to the needs of the nation. The decision cannot be taken out of context.

Thanks for getting.. I had confidence in you. .. kinda. As a fan of context I'm sure you could have placed that $29,310,000,000 into it (>1%).

Yes Flamer, that is the question. Potential self preservation is apparently an optional need/want.

Okay with the constant I thought you were either off your rocker or something was up haha.

Self preservation is relative...as far as the immediate the asteroid is the least of anyone's problems, and as for the broad maybe it's not such a bad thing.

"Worst" case scenario: Everyone dies, no one is left to care.

"Best" case scenario: Irrelevant, money wasted elsewhere.

Best case scenario: From a species-wide perspective we build character as Calvin's dad would say. That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Oh come on, if Mario has taught me anything it's that losing just one life makes the next life better, which is good so long as I don't proceed to lose all three...

No, you said Thunderdome, I just pointed out your error. Original Mad Max is the best of the series by far.
