Everything you download through Limewire is logged by the ISP. Whatever you look at through the internet, your ISP can see that as well. The ISP has a legal contract with the copyright companies stating that they must report illegal activities regarding music and such through certain programs.

So when you use Limewire, it gets logged in the system as illegal activity ( of course, it depends on what you download, limewire itself still isn't illegal ) and then gets passed on for legal action regarding that. When you purchase your internet conection, you agree to allow your ISP to see everything you do on the internet. Unless you use a program such as TOR, all your activities can be seen by the ISP. Just that when you download something off... Say an FTP server or a secure connection or password protected areas, they cannot tell what exactly you are downloading, but the case with Limewire is such that they agreed to allow copyright companies to use their engine to catch people who download music illegally.

I think it was November, when 100 letters were issued across the UK for fines over $5,000 regarding illegal downloading. My friend was one of them. You need to break the law significantly to get such a fine ( say, download 2,000 songs ), if you don't then they wont take much notice because they don't really have a case against you.

There was a case about some woman, a month or so ago, who downloaded this little game on bittorrent and shared it ( can't remember the name, I think it may have been pinball, but it was only worth like $9.99 ) and she was fined over $150,000.

ps. Limewire sucks. My brother used it way back and my computer was never clear of virus'. Now it's torrents and a clean pc.

We aren't telling people where to get music illegally, nor are we supporting it. It's merely a conversation about the illegalities and legalities of such programs, and their problems. Not illegal in any way. Neither torrenting or using limewire, or using rapidshare is illegal, so this conversation is perfectly okay.

Hey hey, fair enough.

But one thing.... You say "all you can listen", does that mean direct streaming and no downloading? And the quality of the music?

If it's streaming then screw that, I need it on my MP3.

Zune pass, but I think iTunes has something similar. Quality is fine (192 kbs I think). I keep 10 songs a month even after a cancel.

Edit: yes it goes on my MP3 Player

Everything is monitored. They may not know EXACTLY what you are downloading, but they sure as hell know how much you have downloaded and where you have downloaded it from. Usenet, Rapidshare, etc.

As long as the physical file you download from the net, be it porn, music, movie or whatever, is "unidentifiable" - as in, the file name, folder, RAR file, is not matching the name of music and stuff, then they know nothing more than the fact that you just downloaded 6GB worth of a WinRAR file from a Usenet account - As the ISP has no access to your physical computer (it's illegal for them to even attempt it). Even if the files are correctly named, they have no proof that it wasn't a "direct share" from one user to the next ( which is technically still legally allowed ) so they still have nothing on you. It's all a bit iffy, but if you make sure that either the RAR files are password protected or renamed or doing it through a secure connection, then you should be fine.

For example, a safer way of getting torrents off the net is to purchase a Seedbox and download the files there and then manually transfer them to your computer. As far as anyone knows, that could be your computer in another country. Therefore no legal action can be taken.

Diamond package?

I don't like the idea of my ISP knowing what I download. SSL certainly is a step in the right direction
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

How can you tell whether a site is SSL secured?  Is it just the little lock in the lower right hand corner (firefox)?

I'm with XSnews (dutch), and it says "● Gratis SSL toegang" which means "free SSL acces". Does that mean  I have SSL? Or is must I activate/setup first?

sorry for the noobish question

You gotta set it up in your client first. Most likely there'll be a checkbox in the server settings. Usually you'd also have to change the port to 563 (I think at least - Check the XSnews site)

Problem is, when you have 5000+ songs in your library, paying 99 cents for every song adds up REAL quick.  And Limewire is definitely more dangerous than torrenting.  I know that here in the US all of the big piracy busts involve high school/college students pirating through Limewire.
I have 7500+ songs - but if you buy them over time... I'm not saying you have to buy it all at once, but you don't get 500 albums overnight, unless you're not that selective

I'm on my way to buying everything I "own". Done it with games, halfway through with music. Currently broke though ^^

The artist only gets like 5 cents from a $1 download, the rest goes to the record company and guys selling the thing.

I go to gigs, buy music and the merchandise... Artists get 15 cents, btw. Which means 1 million bought = 150'000 - I'd be so pissed if I got that money
