http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2007/09/0 … e-profits/

For Microsoft’s fiscal year 2007, which ended in June, the company reported revenues of nearly $11.18 billion for its Windows Server products, just over $14.97 billion in Windows desktop sales, but over $16.39 billion in revenues from its Microsoft Business Division, 90% of which come from sales of Office.
Little more than 1%

The company works perfectly, the program is riddled with bugs.

Or for me anyway.
That's a bit of an oxymoronic statement; if the company 'worked' perfectly then they wouldn't have created and rolled out a program riddled with bugs . But ok, I get your point. Steam is one of the major projects and 'products' of Valve though- it's a huge source of their revenue and a huge commercial advantage- so you can consider Steam to be an invention and product in their folio that is even more important and time-consuming than the Source-engine games they develop.

Shutdown steam, go to C:\Program Files\Steam, delete clientregistry.blob and reboot steam. No guarantees though.

Actually when I think of Valve I think of Half-Life, CS and TF. I think of Valve's primary products, not the way they deliver them.

Just as when I think of Microsoft, I think of windows, not the box it comes in.

Steam is their cash-cow now though, they make tons more money through the extra-markups they charge on their products, plus the deals they sign with 3rd party publishers and developers to use their distribution platform. Think about it: even when they have 'Sales' on their own game,s e.g. HL, CS, TF, those revenues are intrinsically linked and boosted by the Steam Store's profits. I daresay that Steam is the program/service that has kept Valve at the forefront of PC development-- it's a feat for such a small and centralised development team to stay relevant and to stay influential. Steam has had tons to do with that and has inspired lots of cloneware.

I do love Steam. It's so convenient, easy to use etc etc. Downloading games, using Steam to join friends in-game etc. It's great.

But I don't like how completely dependent it is on both their servers and my connection.

Their markups are lower than that of most publishers. As far as I know devs make more of a profit off steam sold games than they do on store sold ones. Valve takes 30% (I think), the rest is to the devs/publisher who fix the price. Which is why Activision are such bastards for what they did to Australian CoD4 prices on steam.

I see what you're saying about staying relevant though, they have become a bit of a wildcard. Such a small organisation holding so much influence on the market.

Anywayyyyyy... Problem Persists!

I reinstalled my drivers and it fixed the game. I stopped playing after a while and the problem came back. Faulting application left4dead.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module shaderapidx9.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0002e0d6. I tried a fix I found on the steam forums, didnt work. I tried to reinstall my drivers again after uninstalling them and it didnt fix it this time.

Im stumped

Did you reinstall steam?

And I´m not sure, but is there a way to force steam to check for updates or update manually?

Did you participate in one of the betas you can choose from through steam?

running out of ideas here....
