There are up to 4.2m CCTV cameras in Britain
Fears that the UK would "sleep-walk into a surveillance society" have become a reality, the government's information commissioner has said.

Richard Thomas, who said he raised concerns two years ago, spoke after research found people's actions were increasingly being monitored.

Researchers highlight "dataveillance", the use of credit card, mobile phone and loyalty card information, and CCTV.

Monitoring of work rates, travel and telecommunications is also rising.

Vienna is also packed with cameras and I dont have a problem with it. I trust that the government and the police will only use it for good.

Most covered is the subway and in 5 years I have never seen a fight or robbery anywhere in the subway system. I listen to radio regularly and I'm fond of news papers and I also cant remember (from the top of my head) ever hearing about a newsworthy incident in the subway. I guess all the cameras everywhere are a good deterrent.

But than again, Austria isnt as fucked up as UK or USA as far as crime is concerned.

Also people are becoming more reluctant to help the police and get involved. Its too much off a hassle and time wasting in the modern high-paced lifestyle. Thats why we need as much cameras as possible.

Crime will always be a part of all countries, we will never eradicate it completely: hence minimising it is the only real solution. If CCTV's are part of that solution, then so be it. They can watch me drive my car or walk along the street as much as they want to.

For an American, you're awfully supportive of authoritarianism.

All this surveillance stuff is the negative side of collectivism.  Europe might be good at maintaining its public amenities and having a more coherent set of cultural values, but they really do tend to trust government too much.

I understand that, in order to be a soldier, you have to put a certain amount of faith in governmental authority.  I only put it in certain things -- surveillance of the general public not being one of them.

Well, I suppose I have another question to ask you first.

It seems that a lot of people join the military because they believe strongly in protecting the freedoms of their country.  I'm assuming you must feel somewhat this way.  So I find it odd that you would support the development of a system that immediately infringes upon those same freedoms you probably hold sacred, right?

So let me get this straight.

You're willing to waste all this time and money on surveillance to supposedly make it harder for people to be lazy and so that people making "easy money" get busted.

I suppose that depends on what you mean by easy money.  If you're referring to corporate crime, it's not going to do shit.

It's not about the cameras themselves, it's the people behind it. So far, and right now they're just cops that are pretty useless at doing anything except "i see some drunken yobs there, dispatch unit". But yeah, it leaves a good infrastructure there for someone in the future to abuse.

So right now, yeah you can say "big deal, they only look out for people being dickheads" - but that's not the point most people are trying to make, like I said, it's good infrastructure for future people to abuse.

Then again, I'd say there's a pretty low chance of any true authoritarian V for Vendetta shit coming to reality. But you never know
