The oil washes and weathering is definitely something you gotta practice to master.
It's really fun taking older models and practicing the washes and weathering techniques on them.
First thing to do is spray the whole model with a clear gloss laquer/enamel. Once that dries, you can slop on the black and brown oil paints without hurting the decals or original finish.
It's best to water oil paints down with thinner or if they are acrylic, use water. This way, it'll fill in the cracks, and bring out some detail. Once you apply the oil wash, wait a bit for it to dry up, then take a cloth and start wiping it off and streaking it across wings, etc.
After the wash dries, apply a clear flat coat, to protect it all.
I gotta build a new workstation for my modeling, maybe out in the garage, because I've ran out of room in the house. Once I do, I'll be posting up pics of a P47 I have about 70% complete. I f'ded up the aluminum finish when i tried airbrushing it, and its been sitting for about 4 years ever since

For Warhammer, Battletech, or any of the other miniatures games where you tend to use a good number of the same basic model,
look into silicone or plaster molding - or CNC an aluminum mold, if you have access to a CNC machine.
Modify one miniature to suit your needs, then make a casting mold of that model.
My most difficult one was a then-current Battletech 3025 WMR/RFL hybrid mech.

I considered getting into battletech but that shit is soo rare.

I work above a badly vented screen printing room. You can smell the paint on my clothes when I get home its that strong. I used to get headaches (15 years ago) but don't even notice it now.M.O.A.B wrote:

When I was making tank models a while back I used spray cans to put on the base coat. Used to wear one of those surgical masks you get from B&Q. Never really helped though, when I took them off you could see some of the colour where the particles had come through and hit the vapour from my breath.

I made an old Wellington bomber once, but i've not made a Lancaster. They're of a similar design.
I've made a Seafire Mk 47, Spitfire, Beaufighter, F16. However, our idiotic cleaner pushed over the stand they were sitting on and now several have broken/missing parts

I've done a lot of bullet casting and silicone moulding of other things, that never occurred to me.
Wheel weights are a handy source of hard lead alloy.
