I agree, it suppresses the free will of people giving them taboos about things that shouldn't be prejudiced by a philosophy (because that is religion, a philosophy) adjusted to the benefit of some (mostly economic benefit and sometimes sexual rights and whatnot).

Most people don't believe in religion, especially younger people.

So no

It's an opium for people who believe in it, for those who don't it's an annoyance.

I think when Karl Marx described religion as an opiate of the masses he meant that it gave people a sense of hope for the next life so they are complacent in this life.  What do people that are distraught and poor and feeling like they have no meaning in life look forward to?  Religion is one occupying thought that can disturb the motivation for something more, snuffing the desire for something better.  Karl Marx saw the poor working class as instrumental to a workers revolution, therefore was very interested in the mindset of those poor and how religion affected that mindset.

bring it back OT?

If religion helps people live their lives in happiness, light at the end of the tunnel and all that, wonderful, good luck. If it gives them a decent moral code to live by, even better.

Religion, whilst numbing the senses may appear on the whole an attractive thing, there's so much underlying stuff. Yeah, it may numb, but then you have to worry about adhering to the (sometimes extremely strict) rulings of the particular religion.

In agreement with Ted, if it brings happiness to people's lives, then so be it, it may be a good thing, but as far as I can see, it's better off to just not believe. <--- PERSONAL OPINION NO FLAME ME!

In recent times "It numbs the senses to make life easier." could not be more wrong. Look at Palestine/Israel, Iraq, Ireland, the source of these wars are rooted in religion.

Two problems.

Ireland was England's bitch before England broke from the Catholic church. The Muslims and Jews lived peacefully together until the British came in and fucked everything up.

Religion doesn't cause war. England does.

I could say the opposite. Looking at it differently, it just makes things seem so much more 'real'. And that's scary.

I disagree. Religion is not just the idea that "be good (according to these principles) and good things happen when you die", but there is far more to it. Some-what I would call cynical-people may think that way, but that is using the definition that has been narrowed down to a sentence from a concept that easily requires paragraphs.

Whilst thinking about the context in which the words were first uttered, religion isn't exactly opiate of the masses these days, or at least I hope not, based on judging how much it has to do with my life. From being on a college campus for such a long time, I'd suggest that alcohol is. It's amazing how much of what people do for piss-tasting liquid (judging from the Keystone Light cans I see littering lawns on Mondays). It's disgusting, actually (referring to boozing, although I'm told Keystone is, too).

Its good for some people, not so good for others.  Like anything which attracts structure, it can and often is misused.

I doubt that.

The religious turn to faith to make them feel better about the dark. The atheist turn to science and reason to find there own answers for the great beyond. Both help deal with the mystery of death, but the former offers golden streets and 72 virgins, the latter states we are star dust and become compost. The mass market appeal of the former is obvious. I have always maintained both are equally ridiculous as agnostics know where its at.
