This is very similar to the "what tech did you buy today" thread however, this one is designed for people who don't really know to much about computer systems.
Posting should include: Latest Hardware/software. Value for money. Best tech to have.

Saves people having to create new threads every time something new comes out

Mission impossible... almost... at least it will take hefty load of time to manage and update monthly at least 6 rigs in different price ranges...

entry level, budget, mediocre, high end, very high end, best of the best.

If some others share the workload, I'm in... but I'm not going to do that by myself...

Been talked about lots, but we've all just concluded that it's too much work.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

A computer with at least a Core 2 processor in it.  This Pentium 4 sucks.

I knew this would happen ...

Anyhow quads are for high end machines IMO. i7 is a quad core. Problem solved

I also know why a guide like this would have failed... with anything better than budget rig, you need to customize the build to suit your needs. Quad for multitasker like me, dual for gaming only.... etc.

edit: oh and DDR3 prices just  came down A LOT. My kit for example dropped from 219€ to 125€. Cheapest X58 from Gigabyte costs around 220€ and the i7 is getting price cutted more any moment...

Yeah pretty much what everyone has said - I had toyed with the idea but everyone has a different budget and wants to do different things so it'd be a waste, really.

I just got pretty much that same system for a computer at work. Got a 400W Silverstone PSU for $40 instead of the Antec which was like $80.

That website is an australian website so all of the prices are in AU dollars. Basically aims to do exactly what this thread is about. It's wiki style so it's changed by the people who visit the website. It may not be perfect but i've found it to be a fair guide if i'm too lazy to customize a build for someone. Covers boxes, systems, HTPC's, etc.

Nuclear Power FTW! I don't even pay for electricity I use, it's just 50CHF/Month flat.

Anyhow it's not that bad. I use maybe 1.5kW max on average
