Just to be safe I installed in Virtual PC. Not bad, after Vista I probably won't upgrade til SP1
I beta tested both Vista and W7... and W7 beta is better (in terms of stability and how much stuff works) by far than Vista SP1. Vista beta on the other hand.... was horrendous. So tbh I think it's safe to switch/dualboot as soon as it goes RTM

Some things I hate with W7:

IE8 seems to freeze when I try and save large images, and then randomly copies them into my MSN conversations when I least expect it...

I can't copy images directly into Photoshop CS4, I have to save them then open them etc.

The fucking taskbar is WAY too chunky (But that might be because I'm still on 1280 x 1024).

Other than that, it seems pretty solid. I love the new right click menu on the taskbar's programs and the control you have from there.

I don't like that it has taken over my XP install as the default OS to boot from... Means I have to manually choose my XP hard drive when I want to boot onto XP. That's annoying.

So what, you lazy.

Pretty sure you can shrink it. And it's only like 10pixels or so bigger than vista. And you can make it minimise.

Try having to open your PC, take out both your HDDs, swap the fiddly jumper I have lost 13 times, replace HDDs, screw them in, replace cables.

Yeah, stop moaning

EDIT: Right click taskbar, properties, check the box "use small icons".

There is nothing to be scared of.  My Vista drivers work on Windows 7.  I have nForce 5 chipset, nVidia 8800GT, and Creative X-Fi Extreme Gamer.  All work like they are suppose to.

I think i'll wait for a little while longer before installing.  Windows Vista's x64 drivers seem to work just fine.

To paraphrase BJ Clinton, "Ah feel yah pain!"

But, Back in the Day™, it was:
1) set the render up at 5:30pm as you left the office,
2) come in to work at 6:30am to make sure the render was done,
3) go make coffee,
4) come back to find the Windows NT 4.0 CAD station had puked all over itself, bluescreened, killed the render, AND corrupted the local DWG file.
5) cut loose with a 2 minute long cussing and muttering tirade vivid enough to cause the grizzled old machine shop foreman to pause and scratch his head in bewilderment.

Ah.. technology .. ain't it wonderful?!  We can now crash and burn at 12 times the speed previously possible!!  Wooo fucking Hoooo!

Meh... BSOD's regulary...

However, it looks hot, and its nice to know Microsoft have finally updated the components of Windows that haven't been touched since 3.1 (networking, task bar, etc).

(Yes, I know it's a beta)(Yes, 3.1 probably didn't have a task bar)(Mmm... it probably didn't have networking either ).

I've been running Windows 7 on a Lenovo T61p Laptop (w/ the Quadro n570 video card), without a single bluescreen yet.

A couple of games will not run at all, and a couple other games require settings tweaks to run.. but I've had more stability out of the Beta Windows 7 than I've had from any previous MS OS.

And, the built-in sticky notes are Baaaack.  One built-in app I really did miss from the early 1990's.

It's kinda tragic that Windows 7 seems .. adequate.  I was really looking forward to my next system being OSX, with a non-network XP64 partition for CAD work.

What a huge difference.

This is everything Vista should have been. MS should offer give the Vista shmucks a price break.

If so, what's performance like?

I may use it on mine...

I'm assuming the beta key I got from MS will work on a torrent-downloaded version?

^^^^ Which brings up a question - any one have any idea how the "The Windows 7 Beta is going to be available download-only (we’re not sending out physical media) and available for a limited time to the first 2.5 million people who download the beta" bit works?

I.e, if I downloaded the beta (from Microsoft) and have a beta key (from Microsoft), but have yet to install it, will it it still work when I do get round to it?

Yeah, they got rid of the 2.5mil and changed it to as many people as possible up until yesterday.

Sweet.

My follow-up question was going to be "Has it really taken so long for 2.5 million copies to have been downloaded?"...

Actually, there's still a chance that they could stop installs/activations... :S

Guess I'll have to try it...

i doubt they will.  you originally signed up for that key, it's probably attributed to one person and one person only.

I downloaded about 30% of it and it failed. I refreshed the download page and another key showed up onscreen. I think I have 2 to use now
