My mom's school has a lot of underprivileged kids. Instead of buying our family gifts, she gave a couple families $100 gift certificates to Wal-Mart, and I gave a lot of old pants, shirts, and jackets to them. Feels good, man.

I work in the kitchen at the shelter a few days each month.  I don't work the kitchen around Thanksgiving or Xmas because there are so many volunteers during that time.

So, if you enjoyed holiday charity - try if possible - to add in a few more during different times of the year.
Yep ... we typically suspend support to the poor and at-risk during the week before Christmas because so there is such a flood of good will coming out of the woodwork.  That's December, but the month after Christmas is a dead-zone.  No one volunteers, no one gives, no one cares.   And the other ten months it is paltry.  Outside of December, the vast majority of people regress into a pattern of self-centeredness and self-love with an attitude of "screw the poor and the destitute ... let them fend for themselves! ... I've got to fill my house with more pointless stuff"

Token gestures of time and money during the holidays are nice and I'm sure they make people feel good.  But, if you REALLY want to help, try doing something and giving something regularly during the other 11 months of the year.  That's when stuff is truly needed.

(P.S.  I work full time with the children and families who are poor, at-risk, homeless, abused, etc.)

I admit I could do more in regards to time.

I don't tell when/where and how much I pay in charity.
But yeah... Help others. Who knows, maybe help will return to you when day when you really need it.

Wow a thread by ATG that I actually support 100%

Good for you.  I used to donate far more time than I have in the last year or so to Food Not Bombs and a shelter in LA, but I've been slipping this year.  I did donate a bunch of food (not Ramen either) around Thanksgiving and I actually loaded up on kid's toys to take to the Orangewood Shelter today.

The American Legion post I belong to puts on a Marine Corps birthday breakfast and a pasta dinner. We (post members) donate all the money for the food and supplies needed to host the functions and take all of the profits to buy toys for kids. This year we raised almost $5,000 for the kids in town who otherwise wouldn't have a Christmas. Feels good.

I donate to the ASPCA when I can, and for the past two summers I've volunteered at a homeless assistance program. Certainly does feel good man.

Once I get a steadier flow of money (read: Around the middle of January when my schedule is super freed up and I can work more shifts) I'll probably start donating to this microloan company. That is, it's a company that facilitates microloans between people who donate the money and entrepreneurs in poor countries. So I'd be donating to some person's fund to, say, buy a new sewing machine for her clothes mending business.

Unlike PETA, the ASPCA actually has a point (and Sarah McLachlan  )

I can't help but get depressed when I see that commercial. They certainly know how to evoke emotions out of people.

Indeed. Not to mention they have their own police force and work with the police as what they're doing is just upholding the law.

I'm going to the Miami-Dade SPCA tomorrow and donating $50, as I said I'd do earlier in the thread.

Dunno if I should wait till I get back to NY and just donate it to the Suffolk SPCA/ASPCA though, as with the cold weather they probably need it more.

Charity is charity though, I guess.
