I'm having trouble installing Vista on my PC. Im using a genuine Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit CD, but the OS wont install. I keep getting a message saying that 'setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application.' Anyone got any ideas? I've tried everything I know.

Do you have 4 sticks of RAM or 4gb of it?

It's a Dell, Nuff said
Intel Pentium 4 3GHz
3.2GB DDR2 RAM recognised by Windows XP Home (have 5GB RAM installed)
NVidia GeForce PCI-E 9800GTX+ OC
Is there anything else you need to know?

I tried copying the entire lot to the harddisk, still came up with the same problem.

You sure your P4 does 64 bit?

There have been issues with it not installing with more than 2GB in. One suggestion is to leave only 2GB in, install, then add remaining RAM.

Really? even with an error of non-32 bit application?

Do you know if your CPU supports 64bit?  What is the exact model of the CPU if you're not sure and we can let you know.  It sounds to me with that error that you have a 32 bit cpu.

@OP: How are you running the setup? From within windows, or by booting to the install disk?

Also, your P4 is almost certainly a 32bit CPU, as everyone else has said.

That. And my god, why are you running a 9800GTX+ with a P4?

I should just point out that there were 64bit P4's.

So it may be a 64bit CPU.

PROTIP: setup.exe is itself x64.

Use the 32-bit disc and use the same CD key.

So you're saying that would limit the capabilities of the rest of his components by having the p4?

We haven't established whether he does have a 32bit or 64bit CPU yet!

I suspect the error message is because he's trying to run the 64bit setup from WITHIN 32bit XP.

That would happen whether the CPU is 64bit or not.

Intel made P4 64bit (first ones came 2004-2005) but yours isn't?
How did you try installing 64bit OS?

Tried both of those. Booting from startup just gave me Blue screen of death.

I do not know if it supports 64-bit. The model, according to CPU-Z is Intel Pentium 4 531. Sound about right?

A lot of noise about the CPU going on, I'm guessing then that I should probably upgrade the CPU too? Or the motherboard, or both, if that is where the problem lies?

Many thanks for the patience

The P4 531 supports 64 bit. Try installing with only 1 stick of ram and adding the rest later

plus - YOUR CPU IS FINE! (well, it's not THE BEST, but it's fine) it should run 64bit Vista no probs.
