Looking for an MMO and...

something basic to keep me busy on my laptop.

For an MMO I'm looking for:

-Not EVE
-Not WoW.

That's pretty much it. I enjoyed playing both, but EVE lost it's charm for me. WoW is... well, it's WoW. That's about all I can say. I played the demo, I was sucked in, but it got a bit "grindy", plus, it's WoW. I'll take a look at all suggestions/

For my laptop:

Something free or cheap. A platformer or something simple for when I'm bored out of my skull in class. I just finished the Commander Keen series (for the 715th time) so if you're familiar with that, something similar. Several games, or shareware, freeware, whatever. Nothing graphic intensive, no shooters etc.

Word to all of you, Warhammer is crap. You can pretty much get a feel of the entire game, within the first 5 levels, and its crap. Maybe its just me whos run dry on MMO juice, but once youve played and got bored of WoW, you've played all MMO's. Except EvE <3. For LOTRO, I couldn't get past the first few levels, this is not because I didn't give it chance, its cos it blows xD

Sad. I want a second opinion, the trailer for the game looked kickass.

Well I am currently playing WAR and am enjoying it alot. If you like pvp there isnt much reason why you wont like it.

I also play/played a fair bit of LOTRO, and it is not as terrible as everyone always makes out...it is the most stable game I have played, everyone is nice and it is great looking. I dont know where the hate comes from.

As for it being nerdy, I dont get that either - how is it any different to wow or war? If anything it is less nerdy cause of the mainstream films.

I've had amusing success with Shattered Kingdoms in the past. If any free-to-play ones are polished, that one's it. Not sure if it's still well-populated, though.

Well the "nerdy" bit just reminds me that there's tons of people at my school that are like "this applies to lord of the rings because...". And then you hear them spout on about some characters that nobody gives a shit about, and how this one is sexier than the other, and how they're going to go home and play the collectible card game. It kind of makes me want to puke. I don't mind the whole fantasy-creature-thing, but when I start identifying with these people that practically live in these films, it's kind of creepy.

That said.... Looks like I'm looking at Warhammer, LOTR, or holding out for some Star Wars MMO (that would be sexy...). Also, cheers to death for the laptop game, I'll take a look at it soon. Any other suggestions extremely appreciated

I also used to play Lotro and it is a great MMO from my experience. Great story, maps, scenery, characters, classes, races, etc... But the PvP (PvMP) is not that impressive.

Now I am playing WAR and my initial opinion is that the game is pretty dam good. The story is not as deep as Lotro, but the game is more aimed at the PvP gamer. To me there seems to be a LOT to do and should keep me busy for a while, although I am trying not to get hooked to the point where I spend all my time playing it!

Never played WoW so cant comment. But it seems to be the Daddy of the MMO's

My vote goes for LOTRO. Great story line, I'm not a big fan of PvP, and since it isn't focused on that, thats another plus, and it has great graphics. Also the first expansion is coming out for it, Mines of Moria, this November too.

How one can champion and celebrate EVE and then deride Warhammer Online for being 'crap' and 'samey', I do not know. That's basically like an implicit contradiction; a paradox.

Try Warhammer Online - it's your best bet at the moment. What's the worst that can happen, you pay 30 bucks for a game that you only play for the first free month? Meh, take a chance . Chances are if you're not looking to play World of Warcraft, and dislike Warhammer Online, then the rest of the MMO market will also seem thoroughly unimpressive and bland.

I know it's supposed to get fun later on, but that takes atleast 2-4 months.
The 'learning' skills are even more of a stupid mechanic (should be learned early on, so the pay off later, but this makes the first 1-2 months unbelievably boring).
